Combat Weather...is it time to do away with this special ops unit?

I don't know a thing about this unit.  Never ran across one in real life.  But is this a unit that needs to be?

Say it out loud.

Combat Weather Technician.

In the 21st Century with satellite coverage world wide.  With UAV's providing real time intelligence...with most units having Path Finder trained personnel.

Do we really need this unit?

  1. Let me get this straight...

You don't know a thing about this unit, likely have never heard of them till now, don't really know anything about what they do, yet you think that you can safely conclude that they are no longer needed?

    Just how stupid are you?

  2. when i say i don't know a thing about a unit, what i mean is that i have never had contact with them, trained beside them or talked to a member of it.

i know what the text book says is the mission of Combat Weather Techs but i repeat, i have never ran across one.

additionally if you ever did any pathfinder training then you would know that while weather prediction isn't part of the job, being able to call weather conditions is essential. not exactly the same but similar enough.

  3. After talking to a good cct who I went to jump school with, these guys really are just extra shooters till the cct guys need their input on weather.

  4. Maybe the USAF needs to fulfill their billet of SOF guys?

  5. it sure seems like thats what the USMC is doing. Force Recon is nothing but raiders now but we already have Army Rangers doing that job quite nicely.

  6. unfortunately our military while being great isnt so good at structural reforms, doesnt like to remove things thats no longer relevant or commands or billets, a few generals may lose their jobs.

  8. I'm an Air Force weatherman at the moment, and headed to Ft Bragg as an airborne combat weatherman (non SOF). However, I have buddies that are SOWT (SpecOps Weather Team), and I assure you that your typical Army SF guys/Rangers and/or Marine SOF team members don't have the know-how/training to be a proficient weatherman. Yes, weather observing is fairly simple when using hand-held Kestrels and what not...but trust me, there's much more that goes into it than that (analyzing the big picture (hemispheric scale) condition, and how it translates down to the micro-scale location you're operating in). Basically, if it exists then it's probably needed...it appears you're not taking too much of a jab at SOWTs in general, but more-or-less just posing the question; so no hard feelings.
