10 rounds is NOT enough.

The last time we had nationwide gun control it spurned the creation of subcompact pistols.  Today we're seeing that same notion taken a bit further with pistols like the XD-S having less than 10 rounds.

But when the Orcs or Goblins come will 10 rounds or less be enough?  Would you walk into a gunfight with only 10 rounds?  I wouldn't.  But many people do and if you carry a compact weapon (or live in a state that has a 10 round limit---you should move by the way---then God bless ya) and it holds that many rounds (or less) then that's exactly what you're planning on.

That's why I'm of the opinion that revolvers are no longer ideal defense weapons.  Same applies to those subcompacts that are limited to 10 rounds or less.  The only reason why I even consider carrying a G26 is because I have the adapter to allow it to "neatly" carry the G19's fifteen round magazines.

Just my opinion.  What's yours?

  1. 10 rounds is not sufficient enough to account for stressful situations especially if you have to return fire. The Glock 23 comes with factory 13 round mags, and accepts the 22 mags which are 15 rounds with no adapter. Revolvers are fun to collect, not good enough for protection. Granted, most gun owners or non shooters will make the remark that you need to be more proficient but when it comes down to it, more rounds are better to account for error. When you have that hi-cap to bail you out it's certainly a more comfortable situation.

  2. I keep hearing everyone say 10 rounds is not enough, but in my department I've never heard of more than 5 to maybe 6 shots being fired. Most of these engagements have been from farther away than most shootings actually occur. Revolvers are still great carry guns. I think most statistics show a gun fight lasts less than 2.5 sec. you pull your gun and it doesnt go bang under high stress you will try pulling the trigger 4 to 10 times before your brain says shit it didn't shoot. A revolver just rolls over to a new round. at least 1 out of 5 will go bang. I've also heard you can't hit anything beyond 20 feet with a snubby from the "youtube experts" most people watch. I call bullshit. I can x ring mine at 25 yards all day and I'm not that great with a handgun. Oh and I hear the when revolvers jam you need to take them apart to fix them. This is correct cause it wont really jam 99% of the time it is broke. So if you clean it and keep it repaired it will go bang. Sorry I'm tired of the revolver bashing. Oh another thing I can punch you in the ribs with my revolver and make a contact shot. Try that with most autos. Given the trigger is longer, but they are damn smooth. just stay away from the Rossi, Taurus, and charter revolvers. You can get good ones, but more of a chance to get a bad one.

  3. I got a buddy who carries nothing more than a S&W J-frame. He keeps saying if he needs more than five rounds, it's more trouble than he can handle and he doesn't have a chance, even though he admits that you have to watch out for the threat's friends.

What is odd is that most of the pocket .380s and 9mms didn't pop up until after the AWB expired. And most of those don't even have a capacity of over 7 to 8 rounders e.g. Beretta Nano, S&W Shield, LCP and LC9.

    1. I forgot to mention, it probably means .40 and .45ACPs will be more popular and it might even give new lease to .357SIG and .45GAP.

  4. It really sucks to have almost enough rounds to do the job.

  5. Just saying spraying in praying might not get you life like the idiot trying to kill you but missing all those time might just get you 5 to 10 depending on who else you hit. Im not saying carry more rounds, but be realistic. if you have not ID all the threats before you start to fight back you won't get off 10 rounds.

  6. I'm curious, is this based on anything more than opinion and informed judgement? When was the last time a civilian was gunned down because he emptied his less than ten round magazine?

    1. this is based off opinion and informed observation of an evolving threat.

    2. Max don't quote me but I believe someone was attacked by a grizzly bear in Alaska and emptied his hi cap nine into the bear but did not succeed in bringing the bear down after 17 rounds.
The bear field strip the guy and then ate him.
Now recently a grizzly attacked a man and woman hiking in Alaska and the man shot the bear nine times with a .45 ACP the bear was able to travel 100 yards before dying.

  7. FBI did say at one time the average gunfight was inside 15 feet, took 2.5 rounds per gunman.
I don't see a difference between revolver and small auto's either or will do if it's your personal weapon and you train with it.
A S&W M-640 has five shots if you need more than that your in a firefight not a self defense situation, leaving a fast retrograde ops and unass the Area.
The old saying take five and dive with displacement the main option.
Now if your contemplating Roarkes drift or Little Bighorn scenario's you will need more than an auto with even ten rounds.
Simplest solution is more spare/backup ten round magazines and training to drop and swap smoothly under stress and in the dark.
That being said a .357 mag. revolver with at least a five inch or six inch barrel with target sights six or seven shot is the most general purpose handgun around.
Able to use a wide variety of ammo, take everything from deer to squirrels or men with evil intentions.
Six shots with some re-loaders in a fight use cover and concealment instead of firepower and fire superiority.
I could take a small Glock or revolver and not feel less armed.
Of course Sol, my first responder weapon is a Colt Gov model S-70 in .45 ACP.
my first large bore pistol I ever shot. courtesy USMC for which I am grateful.

  8. Another issues: Are we preparing just for an attempted armed robbery or should we also be prepared for engaging an active shooter?

    1. very good point. i think you should be prepared for the gamut of situations. also consider the guy in Maryland that got knocked out by a gang of youths while on vacation. if you consider the possibility of multiple assailants...drug enhanced robbers...and the possibility of engaging an active shooter thats wearing body armor then i think the 10 is enough is a joke.
