  1. Beautiful Sol, beautiful.

Internal bomb bay and nuclear capable...as you say, bringing the pain!

    What's not to like?

    1. this will probably piss you off but i really see the F-35 being a modern day Buccaneer if successful. fast on the deck, like the buccaneer potentially so fast that other fighters won't be able to catch it without running out of fuel, an internal bomb load and at its beast operating in the maritime environment but fully capable on land too.

    2. Leaving aside many other issues, one of the big reasons to go to stealth is to avoid having to come in on the deck. You only have to look at the experience of the Tornado in Gulf War 2 to see why: they went in low to avoid the SAMs and suffered what was considered unacceptably high losses from MANPADS/AAA, which was almost impossible to suppress with SEAD. Also on the deck you are completely within the engagement envelope of IR and beam riding SAMs, which are unaffected by the F-35's stealth.

Also I don't know why you think the F-35 can out run anything. The only time it can be considered fast is using some sort of standard load comparison that compares an F-35 with no external stores to another plane that has to carry a slew of droptanks, which will simply not happen to fighters chasing an F-35 over their own territory.

Finally, anything behind an afterburning F-35 is going to be able to use IRST and IR missiles to the limit of their ranges in addition to being able to use radar and radar guided missiles against the least stealthy aspect of the plane.

  2. Does not piss me off at all mate, the Buccaneer had many teething problems but it got there to become a strike aircraft that was so good that the RAF famously regarded its best replacement to be another Buccaneer!

I believe that the F-35 will be a game changer, the air forces and navies that have it will count themselves lucky. I'm British and we will never again be a superpower, but our mix of Typhoons and F-35s in the future, backed up by serious ISTAR assets (including Rivet Joint courtesy of our American cousins) and hyper-accurate nuclear weapons will make us a dangerous little island!

  3. Sol, there are some great youtube videos of them on the deck. The thing that amazes me is how we all ooh and arrgh when we see a youtube video of some fast jet pilot doing a low level flypast but for the boys flying Buccaneers that was just another day at he office
