An entertaining little film once you got past all the mythical "mother" planet nonsense. Paganism....a certain kind of Paganism is still around...at least on the movie screen.
Actually Sol, there not Marines. At the beginning of the movie as Jake is debarking the landing craft, he calls them "Merc's for hire". I too loved Col. Quaritch, and really truth be told throughout the movie he was a cool cat.
Paganism is alive. I had a buddy in boot camp, a bit on the crazy side and *really* quirky for the time & place. Wanted to transfer to the professional army, get some SF experience and go merc. No Love & daisies pagan, precisely, but a good kid.
I really didnt like it, the casual racism of the maker, the historical implausability of the resistance winning, the lack of a battleship turnrning up in orbit and glassing the panet.
Terra Nova was pretty good, he's basicaly the same guy.
