US Army increases investment on counter-drone program

Leonardo DRS has received an additional $13 million to continue engineering and testing a vehicle-mounted system that the U.S. Army hopes will protect soldiers from small drones, according to a July 31 Defense Department statement.

Leonardo was awarded an initial $16 million contract by the Army in July 2017 to develop a counter-UAV capability dubbed the Mobile Low, Slow Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Integrated Defense System, or MLIDS, with hopes of deploying “numerous production systems in early summer 2018."

At the annual Association of the U.S. Army conference in October, the company announced it had received a $42 million production contract for an undisclosed number of MLIDS to fit the Army’s requirement to defeat small, inexpensive unmanned systems such as quadcopters and fixed-wing aircraft that operate as airborne improvised explosive devices.

“Drones are becoming an increasingly dangerous threat against our forward-deployed soldiers, and we are proud to support this urgent requirement to protect them from potentially lethal small unmanned aerial vehicles,” Aaron Hankins, vice president and general manager for DRS Land Systems, said in October 2017. “We are working hard to deliver the best capability to our soldiers as quickly as possible."

Leonardo DRS has snagged a production contract for vehicle-mounted weapon systems developed to shoot down and disable small drones, and Army will put the system through its paces in combat next year.

MLIDS is a combination of various sensors and shooters mounted on two mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles, or M-ATV. One M-ATV carriers the electro-optical and infrared sensors; in this case DRS' elevated mast-mounted Surveillance and Battlefield Reconnaissance Equipment. This system is used to cue and track potential targets, as well as engage in electronic warfare by jamming signals controlling the unmanned vehicle.

For another M-ATV, Leonardo has partnered with Moog to offer the Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform. Although the RIwP can be transformed into more than 100 configurations, for this system the turret is expected to fire a 30mm proximity round designed to defeat a small group of one or two UAVs. But DRS also plans to integrate other kinetic weapons onto the platform, specifically a small UAV that can be deployed from the M-ATV to engage the enemy unit.

The RIwP was selected for the requirement over the Common Remotely Operated Weapon System, developed by Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace. CROWS has previously deployed on the Army’s Stryker vehicles and M1 Abrams main battle tank.

Work on the contract is now expected to be complete by May 2019.
Neat setup and should get the job done.  So that leaves the Stryker anti-air variant for heavier aircraft?

Scout portion of the Russian Games...

Impressive obstacle course.

What are we missing by not participating in the games in Russia? A peek at Chinese armor in person!

You miss a little you can miss a lot.

What are we missing by not participating at the games (or even sending some FREAKING OBSERVERS!!!)?  A peek at Chinese armor!

I know.  It's not secret squirrel stuff but we could get a look at their mobility over varied terrain.  Yes I know!  They send souped up vehicles that are stripped down for max mobility.  I get it!  But we would still get a peek!

The funny thing?  Suddenly Facebook identifies more accounts that are linked to a new campaign.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME!  It takes a year to discover this?

The point is clear.

Get past the hysteria.

Get past the arrogance.

Just think for a little bit.  We don't have to invite them into the house, but if they're throwing a barbeque we can still show up....we might be carrying our Glock 19 in the waistband and it might be filled with Critical Duty 135 grain hollow points but we're still there playing nice.

The same applies to these games.

Notional Block 3 Concepts for CH-47

MAJOR HAT TIP to Gareth Jennings Twitter Page for the image from the briefing slides!!!

@USArmy briefing slide shows two notional Block 3 concepts for @BoeingDefense #Chinook. One seemingly geared towards increased lift, the other towards high-speed flight. Story on Block 3 timelines and possible tech to come...

Those who can afford an alternative don’t consider the F-35 a viable air superiority platform.

via HushKit.
Procurement moves by the US (both F-22s and 6th Gen’ plans), Japan (with the F-3) and Turkey with the TF-X show that those who can afford an alternative don’t consider the F-35 a viable air superiority platform. This flies in the face of public announcements by Lockheed Martin, USAF and F-35 pilots regarding the aircraft’s effectiveness in the role, but it is hard to read the facts in any other way. With the Meteor long-range air-to-air missile a likely weapon for Tempest, Air Superiority, or at least a strong Swing Role capability, is likely. The RAF will need a replacement for Typhoon.
Story here.

I'm just the messenger!  If you have a problem with the highlighted portion then go bang on the guys over at HushKit!

But be advised.

I agree with them 110%!!!!

Metal Shark receives Navy contract for patrol boats

Thanks to Jonathan for the link!

via UPI.
Gravois Aluminum Boats, which operates as Metal Shark, has received an $18.5 million contract to provide 40 PB(X) Patrol Boats, basic equipment and training.

The order, announced Friday by the Department of Defense, calls for construction and delivery of the boats, as well as boat equipment, delivery, familiarization and waterjet training, and crew original equipment manufacturing.

The primary mission of the PB(X) is to patrol beyond sheltered harbors and bays for force protection of other forces and infrastructure. It also includes search and seizure missions on intercepted vessels.

It has a hull length of over 40 feet, high maneuverability and a top speed of 40 mph. It features light ballistic protection and can mount a variety of crew-served weapons from an armored forward gunners turret. The Navy plans to purchase over 50 of the vessels, according to Metal Shark.
