Three things. Story is here. Second, this gave me a chance to post pics from my pic library of the Pandur Evo. Last, is it just me or does it seem like Austria with the Pandur Evo and Brazil with Guarani are the only nations that are big into 6x6s?

"The war is lost in 5 days": Polish army exercises "Winter-20" ended in complete failure

The results of "Winter-20" command and staff exercises (CSP) in Poland turned out to be extremely sad for the Polish military.https://t.co/ZCuURZ8kLk pic.twitter.com/HwxrkmpP7G
Another hit from Rob Lee's Twitter Page...
Weird. Poland is selling the American Hind while Lockheed/Sikorsky are on the outside looking in. Wonder what gives.
Which brings me to an interesting chat I had with a friend of mine recently. If I've shared this already, pay me no mind, I am rapidly addling. He and I are buddies from college and the Navy, and we were shooting the breeze a few weeks ago. I told him that I was beginning to https://t.co/h7mfTNDL79

Do a small bit of work and click to read his entire thread. For the lame and lazy he recounts a trip to Austria and walking thru Vienna and seeing the wonderful infrastructure and happy people and recalling that Austria was once a great power and retired gracefully.
He then asks the question. Is it time for the US to retire.
I really don't know.
What happens if we're not the world's superpower? Will our standard of living go up? It seems to me that we're subsidizing many countries defense budgets with our own. We have a large military that is built not for our defense but the defense of others. We have trade practices that are designed to enhance our power, not necessarily our balance sheets.
Is it such a crazy question to ask?
11 Iranians arrested in Arizona after jumping U.S.-Mexico borderhttps://t.co/tNJj2AC367 pic.twitter.com/RCtIdC5Oeu

Well ain't that something. Not even a month yet and the run for the southern border has begun.
Iranians this time (possibly non-hostile...just wanting to escape that regime) but you can bet that every enemy force will make note of this.
How many have we missed?
How many agents/saboteurs/terrorists are headed that way?
Between the economy, covid, internal political strife etc...we definitely don't need some terror attack.
If an attack were to happen and its traced to an illegal immigrant then you will see all kinds of lunatics self activate.
This is concerning and bears watching.

The third observation is that we might think about whether any of this kit would be useful to the US Marine Corps as well. Because not just Russians, but Chinese too. The marines recently decided to start shedding most of their towed M777s for truck-borne M142 HIMARS missile launchers,*** which can throw an ATACMS missile 300 kilometers, and soon enough, anti-ship missiles as well. That combination is considered rather more relevant in a big war in the Pacific, and may also be useful on NATO's northern flank. That all seems in line with this new great power strategy stuff.
However, some of my marine artillery friends are not thrilled about the change (yes, colonel, you know who you are). I suspect that not every target out of 81 mm mortar range merits a HIMARS rocket, and that those rockets can run winchester rather quickly. And heavens, while our marines might call the army for tanks occasionally (that's the plan), let's not have them call just for howitzers. Really—are we British? In contrast, if the discomfiture of some US Marines can be exploited by either Patria or AM General, to create a weapon with a quick time to battery, direct fire capability (to make up for the tanks foregone too), and perhaps even shoot-on-the-move capability, well, someone could score another sale. So, put down the coffee, Finns and Hoosiers. Pick up the gun.
Is that the plan? To call the Army for both tanks and howitzers? How long before we have to call them for infantry?
Ya know if we carry this plan to the max then the Littoral Regiments will be composed of just ant-air & missile artillery afloat. To be blunt there really isn't a need for Marine Infantry. If a raid needs to be conducted then SOCOM can pick a unit to carry it out.
Is that where we're really headed? Missiles, Anti-Air, and drone operators making up the ground component?

The Corps announced in May 2020 that the first Marine littoral regiment would be based out of Hawaii. The Marines expect to experiment with the formation’s components and employment during the next three years before finalizing the unit’s structure.
But the Corps could build as many as three Marine littoral regiments in the Pacific between now and 2030, Brig. Gen. Ben Watson, head of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, said at the National Defense Industrial Association’s annual Expeditionary Warfare Conference on Wednesday
---------------------------------------------------------
That will mean a regiment dispersed in small teams over a wide range, for now focused primarily on the western Pacific Ocean region, Watson said.
Marine Corps Combat Development Command leaders previously have said that the second and third Marine littoral regiments could be based out of Guam or Japan.
But the unit isn’t so tailored that it can’t be applied elsewhere.
Watson said such a formation would work well in “any sort of closed, contested littoral terrain,” such as the Balkans, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea or Black Sea.
Wow. They're experimenting and trashing the legacy Marine Corps for something they're not even sure how to build.
If they do get it built and it does go to war then you do realize that these small units will be hunted down and destroyed at distance.
These Marines are not even speed bumps to a high tech enemy. They're simply sacrificial pawns.
