Normalcy bias

via Wikipedia.
The normalcy bias, or normality bias, refers to a mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.[1]
Don't be a victim of this affliction.

Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean that it can't.  I received this comment and instead of getting angry, I'm amused.  Check this out.
Most of the public wants more gun control, Solomon, so I guess by your (bullshit, btw) Obamacare rationale, Obama should give it to them...and the idea that a DHS purchase of .40 has anything to do with the current national gun-control frenzy is preposterous, take off your tinfoil hat and climb out of your backyard shelter, your blog is no longer a military blog its a doomsday preppers militia paranoid political fantasy
First.  No people don't want more control.  This is an article in Bloomberg written by Stephen Carter.  Go there to read it all but a tidbit...
After the horrific murders three weeks ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown,Connecticutgun-control advocates confidently predicted that a wave of revulsion would sweep the nation. We would, in the popular argot, “hit the reset button,” beginning a fresh debate on new terms.t hasn’t happened that way. Consider a recent roundupof opinion surveys. In the USA Today-Gallup Poll taken just a week after the shooting, when one would expect the largest emotional effect, support for “more strict” gun control in the abstract was at 58 percent, compared with 43 percent about a year earlier. On specifics, 74 percent opposed a ban on private ownership of handguns, and 51 percent opposed a ban on private ownership of assault weapons. (There’smore support for posting armed guards in schools than for limiting access to assault weapons.)Sure, advocates can try to twist these polls into policy preferences. In truth, although the data reflect what might prove to be temporary majorities for such measures as banning magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, one searches in vain for a mandate in support of policies many gun-control advocates prefer. The urgency seems to have gone out of the argument. Even the news media seem to have grown bored by the whole thing.
So no.  Despite an attempt at emotional manipulation, gun control is NOT the will of the people.

The next accusation was that this is no longer a military blog.

Nothing could be further from the truth.  America's gun culture is part and parcel of its martial traditions.  Advances in military arms is mixed with trends in civilian and law enforcement advances in the state of the art.  Much to my disapproval you have the military doing 3 gun.  That started in the civilian world.  Race gunners have changed the way that the military trains and employs small arms.

That came from sports shooters.  European and Asian armies are following suit.  And they're all following sports shooters in the civilian world.  Outside of Special Ops, civilian sports shooters are in many cases ahead of the conventional military.

Last he talks about tinfoil hat.  I make no apologies.  Talk to Numo and other readers in Southern Europe.

I pay attention to what they tell me.

We have a greater debt burden, unemployment that is approaching the same levels and no end in sight to the burden of this debt.

Additionally we have an administration that is ignoring the problem and the only piggy bank anyone can agree on is the US military.

In other words I can easily see the same rioting that is happening in Greece occurring in major cities here in the US if the fiscal crisis is misplayed by either side.  If Iran goes silly and shuts down the straits then Europe and the US will be in a hurt locker.  If the Syrian conflict spills over into Turkey or Israel then again, the Middle East is ablaze.  In Asia, if Vietnam forces the issue and China is belligerent then we can see a naval battle that destabilizes the region.  Same with the Philippines or Japan or S. Korea or Taiwan.  That leaves out the natural disasters that can turn our world upside down.

In other words military affairs is expanding.  If being a "prepper" is being aware of dangers then so be it.  If wearing a tinfoil hat is looking around and seeing a dangerous world then I'm guilty.

But one thing I will never be accused of is NORMALCY BIAS.

ONE LAST THING:  There just isn't much news coming on the defense front that is of interest.  I can almost feel ever defense company holding its breath waiting to see how the fiscal cliff discussions play out.  What should have been solved on the 1st of this month has now been pushed back by a couple so there is nothing going on but uncertainty.  As a matter of fact the only thing that everyone is sure of is that defense will be cut, its just a matter of how much and whether the services will be able to slice enough personnel to pay for weapons or whether the Administration will FORCE them to keep people and delay needed modernization.  If you haven't been paying attention then be advised.  Former Senator and Army Veteran Hagel is a defense critic and his appointment indicates a tough time for the DoD.  He's the budget cutter that Panetta was suppose to be.  What you're likely to see is a repeat of Rumsfeld before the terrorist attacks but without the push for transformation.  Remember Rumsfeld wanted a SMALL high tech military.  Imagine the same but without the high tech.  Cuts but no increase in capability...not even on a power point.

DHS orders even MORE 40 cal hollowpoint ammo.

Thanks Mike for the heads up!

Yeah guys.  This is getting beyond real.  DHS has placed an additional order for 200,000 MORE 40 cal hollow point bullets.

A Blogger early said that it looked like US citizens were gearing up for a war...now it seems like DHS is too...Check this out...

A couple of things.  Read the story at Info Wars here. Second.  Don't be fooled by these rounds being requested by FLETC.  I know for a fact that not even they use hollow points for training rounds.

That's a fact.

Oshkosh $194.9M for Armored Trucks

From Jonathan (thanks!) via Fool.com

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that it has awarded Oshkosh (NYSE: OSK  ) a $194.9 million firm-fixed-price contract, modifying an existing contract for the purchase of "Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles."FMTV is a line of armored military trucks  previously manufactured by BAE Systems, up until the time when Oshkoshwon away the contract to produce them three years ago. That contract, for an indefinite delivery of an indefinite quantity (an "IDIQ" contract) of trucks, anticipated that Oshkosh would ultimately build the U.S. Army as many as 23,000 FMTVs over the course of its relationship. This latest installment is expected to be complete by September 30, 2014.Shares of Oshkosh rose 1.6% to close at $32.07 Thursday, ahead of the Pentagon's announcement.
More trucks?

Wars winding down, budgets tightening.

New instead of rebuilds?

The deficit hawks in the "Republican" party and the peddlers in the "Democrat" party will be licking their chops.

Dems lose in Illinois on gun ban!

via Quad City Times

SPRINGFIELD — There’s not enough support in the Illinois Senate to impose tough new restrictions on semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips. In a setback for gun-control advocates in the wake of the killings of school children in Connecticut, the Illinois Senate was poised to adjourn Thursday without voting on two pieces of legislation aimed at limiting access to certain kinds of weapons and bullets.Although the two proposals could emerge again when the legislature reconvenes next week, the lack of action shows the General Assembly remains divided on how to balance Second Amendment issues.A spokeswoman for Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, offered no timetable for when the gun safety proposals might surface again.“We will take some time to work on these important issues to advance them in the near future,” Rikeesha Phelon noted in a message to reporters. One proposal would restrict the possession, delivery, sale and transfer of semiautomatic weapons, including handguns and rifles.
If you can't make it happen in Illinois then things aren't as bad as I thought.  President Obama's seat of power...home of one of the most corrupt, left leaning nanny city's in the nation and they can't win here.

Yeah.

People are recognizing this for what it is.  Its not about gun control.  Its about people control.  A man with a gun is a citizen.  Without one he's a subject.

Jesus! Winchester is making a rimfire round that goes 3000 fps!

This is for my non-gun readers.  The 5.56mm NATO round (SS109) leaves the barrel of a M-16A4 at 3100 feet per second.

Winchester is about to put on the market a .17 Winchester Super Magnum that goes 3000 feet per second.

Do you know what that means?  It means that you're almost getting combat rifle performance out of a rimfire round (spare me the difference in bullet size and weight...you know I'm talking shot placement and a flat shooting rimfire on a nice trajectory out to distance never seen in a bullet of this type before).

Read about it here at Guns Holsters and Gear.

NOTE:  Lets assume a modest effect range of 200 yards on a windless day.  This round has applications for urban sniping.  Even without a suppressor its report will be much less than a 5.56 or .308 and with the speed that its going with a proper bullet core it should be able to penetrate at least 1st gen PASGT helmets.

"What you see is gun owners getting ready for a civil war"

Watch the video debate here.

Forget the bravado.  Check out this passage from an article on Bob Owens blog.

The customers in the shop were picking through what remained; lever-action rifles, oddball shotguns, and the smattering of name-brand centerfire pistols. One man was attempting to trade in an antique double-barrel shotgun for something more current.I did speak to one harried clerk, briefly. They didn’t know when they’d be getting anything back in stock, from magazines to rifles to pistols. Manufacturers were running full-bore, but couldn’t come close to keeping up with market demand. It wasn’t just the AR-15s, the AK-pattern rifles, the M1As, and the FALs that were sold out. It really hit me when I realized that the World War-era M1 Garands , M1 carbines, and Enfield .303s were gone, along with every last shell. Ubiquitous Mosin-Nagants—of which every gun store always seems to have 10-20—were gone. So was their ammo. Only a dust free space marked their passing. I’ve never seen anything like it.Every weapon of military utility designed within the past 100+ years was gone. This isn’t a society stocking up on certain guns because they fear they may be banned. This is a society preparing for war.
They don't know what they're about to unleash in Washington.  They have no idea at all.

SIDENOTE:
The letter below is making the rounds of the right wing blogosphere accompanied with the caption...are the Republicans about to sellout gun owners.  Even more troubling is the fact that I heard on FoxNews tonight one of the analyst say that he spoke to a Senior Republican and asked him flat out...will you some Republicans vote for a gun ban and the answer was yes.  We might be in some trouble men.  Write your Congressman.

A Democrat Party Scheme???

Interesting.

New York.  Illinois.  Oregon.

All those states move to limit their citizens 2nd Amendment Rights.

Try that down South and I can show you a politician that will be out of office. Try that in the Mid West (except for Illinois)...try that in Arizona..Utah...Montana and the same applies.

I contend that this is all coordinated.  I also contend that you can see the battle lines being drawn in this fight.  Once again it will be red against blue states.

I bet body parts this is designed to show momentum for an assault weapons ban...in the end this will cost the Democrats dearly.  Add these draconian laws to the Obama Care taxes and the increase in payroll taxes that the President just signed and you're going to see Tea Party 2 make the first one look like a picnic.

The President and the Democrat party seriously miscalculated on this one.

I can't wait to see the fall out.

You got to love Israeli Tank Instructors.

Female tank instructors of the School of Infantry Professions conducted a drill with their Nagmachon tanks and armed hummers on Tuesday. These instructors are always training together since they are responsible for teaching all infantry soldiers in different professions, whether it be operating tanks and/or mastering firearms.

None of my "instructors" looked like that.

This shit is about to get real.

Check out the vid below.  James Yeager is somewhat controversial but he has a following and is a well known Firearms Instructor.  Check out his wording.  I've heard some of the same stuff in some rowdy parts, some of the same stuff in dens and living rooms, the same stuff at the firing range and on the back forty.

James is being careful.  Others are not.  This gun ban shit is gonna get real and no one is paying attention.  I hope lawmakers get there head out before its too late.  The country is a tender box and the President doesn't seem to care or it doesn't matter to him.

Gun grabbers DO NOT understand the danger that they're causing.

The gun grabbers just don't understand the danger that they're causing with these upcoming gun ban bills.

They forget that the President was only re-elected with a 52-48% percentage margin.  THAT IS FAR FROM A MANDATE!

They forget that the President is only popular on the coasts and in large urban areas.

They forget what happened the last time they succeeded in getting a gun ban.

Have you ever wondered what would happen with a Brady Bill on steroids?  Have you ever stopped and thought about how many Timothy McVeigh's they're creating?  Did you not notice the rioting at the Mississippi State campus right after the election?

Instead of being a centrist leader, the President is seeking to transform America...unfortunately for him half the population ain't buying what he's selling.

Consider everything I've written and then watch the vid below.  There are people that are fanning the flames.  If this is being said in the open then wonder what is being said behind closed doors.

This could easily lead to massive acts of public disorder.  Not rioting but acts of disobedience that could easily be confused with terrorism.  Even worse is the fact that Police, National Guard and the Military are being lined up as the enemy instead of the leaders that are pushing this through.

THIS WILL GET NASTY.

Let's hope these bills are killed.  Gun grabbers have talked alot of shit.  Some gun owners won't talk at all...they'll just act.

Defeating gun control could come down to one man doing the right thing...

House Majority Leader John Boehner
I'm more than a bit disappointed by the pro gun forces.

We're unorganized (thank you NRA for doing absolutely nothing), we're scattered and we're flailing about.

Lets stop and assess the situation.  The gun grabbers control the White House and the Senate.  The supposed good guys control the House of Representatives.

Because of House rules, the supposed good guys can decide what gets brought up for a vote.  And that falls on one guy.

John Boehner.

I've been writing Congressmen like crazy.  I've even made a few phone calls.  I've followed the issue closely but no one is even suggesting that we should put pressure on Boehner.

Now for the bad news.

Usually bills aren't brought forward unless a majority of the majority are in favor.

Boehner broke that rule.

I hate to say it but unless someone can get in Boehner's ear, change Houseleadership or get a vow of right thinking from the Majority Leader then we could be in trouble.

UPDATE:
I stand corrected.  The Military Arms Channel already put it together and aimed its fire at John Booehner.  He's the key.  Check out the vid below.

Bleacher Reports Hit of the Year!

Can you say BOOM!

This is how anti-gun rights people actually feel about gun owners.

via Monderno. note...Monderno is pro gun rights, he simply found this article from an anti-gun nut job and passed it along.  Donald Kaul is the writer of the article.

Repeal the Second Amendment, the part about guns anyway. It’s badly written, confusing and more trouble than it’s worth. It offers an absolute right to gun ownership, but it puts it in the context of the need for a “well-regulated militia.” We don’t make our militia bring their own guns to battles. And surely the Founders couldn’t have envisioned weapons like those used in the Newtown shooting when they guaranteed gun rights. Owning a gun should be a privilege, not a right.

Declare the NRA a terrorist organization and make membership illegal. Hey! We did it to the Communist Party, and the NRA has led to the deaths of more of us than American Commies ever did. (I would also raze the organization’s headquarters, clear the rubble and salt the earth, but that’s optional.) Make ownership of unlicensed assault rifles a felony. If some people refused to give up their guns, that “prying the guns from their cold, dead hands” thing works for me.

Then I would tie Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, our esteemed Republican leaders, to the back of a Chevy pickup truck and drag them around a parking lot until they saw the light on gun control.

Yeah that's right.

That's how the anti-gun people talk when they're behind closed doors.  If they want a war with real body counts then the gun owners of America is your huckleberry.

Oh and Mr Kaul.  From my cold dead hands works for me too.  Do me the favor of picking up mine yourself.

C-295 AEW with winglets.

Airbus Military has begun flight-testing a modification to add winglets to the C295 medium transport and surveillance aircraft – one of a series of product developments underway on the market-leading type.
The winglets, which are short extensions to the wingtips of the aircraft, have the potential to improve performance in the take-off, climb and cruise phases of flight by increasing the lift-drag ratio.
Possible in-service benefits include improved hot and high runway performance, increased range and endurance, and reduced operating costs.
First flight of the wingletted aircraft took place with complete success at Airbus Military’s Seville facility in Spain on 21 December. Data from that flight is being analysed and will be added to data from future flights, providing the basis for a decision on whether or not to incorporate winglets into the C295 design. The photograph shows the C295 during its first flight with winglets.

Sweet looking airplane...Eric Palmer Blog is convinced that the C-295 is more capable than the C-27.

I'm not sure but I am impressed by how versatile the airplane is.  A cargo, airborne early warning, maritime patrol and gunship version exist.  Quite honestly a smaller force would be wise to neck down to this one type to save money on maintenance alone, much less pilot training.

UPDATE:  Someone responded in  the comments section that  fully explains why the C-295 has been gobbling up orders all over the world.  I honestly had thought it had to do with price but its obvious from the figures put up by the anonymous commenter that the C-295 is indeed a world beater.  Next question.  How did it lose to the C-27 in the Army's Sherpa replacement contest????

Is Iran really that big a threat? I'm just asking questions out loud.

video via Navy Recognition...

Don't get me wrong.

I know that madmen with a nuclear weapon is dangerous...but then I look at Pakistan and N. Korea...

I look at their conventional forces and all I can think is that tiny Singapore would put up a MUCH more credible defense than Iran ever could....and then I think of all the multi-national drills that are being held to defeat this strawman enemy and I can't help but wonder if we're not being played.

I FULLY SUPPORT Israel...but they've taken out bigger and badder solo...so exactly what is the game here.  Why is Iran being held up as a clear and present danger to the world?

This is gonna piss the Brits off.

Man!

I have issues with some Brits (that pedophile looking Pierce Morgan and others attempting to insert themselves into our internal politics when it comes to our 2nd Amendment rights) but the British people will have every right to be pissed about this.  Check out this article via the Guardian...

The UK and other European countries must use the money saved by withdrawing from Afghanistan to re-equip their military and help reverse worrying cuts in defence spending, the American ambassador to Nato will warn on Tuesday.Ivo Daalder said if Europe did not invest in new capabilities, its over-reliance on America would continue at a time when Washington had made the far east and China its new strategic priority."If we don't start soon in investing in those capabilities then the gap between the US and the rest is going to grow. And if it is bad now, then it will be worse. If we have problems, they will be even worse."
You better have balls the size of King Kong to tell a British Mother whose son died in Afghanistan some stuff like that.

You better brace up and be prepared to get punched if you tell a British serviceman that served in Afghanistan some stuff like that.

You better duck for cover when you realize that the UK was laughed at for supporting us in this war...especially when the US is about to cut back on defense spending itself.

The arrogance in this statement is stunning.  Who is running that shop and how did they think this was a good idea????

Oh, once again you doubt me?  Check out the vid below and then ask how we can lecture anyone on defense spending.
