Hot Take on the only war that really matters in the Pentagon...the budget.
This is my hot take.
If I was Chief Of Staff Of the US Army, I would immediately send Putin a thank you note.
This whole drama and the tired old attitudes in the Washington DC (along with a whole bunch of whining from our allies) has just saved the Army's budget.
Before this drama, the Army was fighting for relevance (not the Marine Corps...the freaking Army).
Policy makers had honed in (finally) on the threat that is China and the whole apparatus was swinging to confront the real threat.
Not anymore. This group CANNOT walk and chew bubble gum. All eyes are on Ukraine (note that we don't have a defense treaty with Ukraine...that's why you don't see troops there...IT IS NOT THE SAME AS TAIWAN!!!).
Inflation is out of control.
Gas and food prices are spiking and shelves are still sometimes bare.
Rents/Housing is reaching the point of being beyond the reach of the average consumer.
Crime.. if you feel safe outside your home then you've lost your mind. Homeless people, gangs, meth/crack/fenny and all the rest of the drugees are zooming around and that doesn't include the usual car jackers, thieves, stick up kids and plain psychos that cross your path everyday and you never know about it.
We have enough worries at home PLUS China that will kill us all. The Europeans really should be handling this mess, not the US.
Want the sad facts.

Even worse? Our entire strategy in the Pacific depends on the US working with allies. The EABO concept requires us to setup on foreign territory to launch missiles.
How many of you think that once the US crosses swords with China (or looks like it will) that anyone in the region is gonna get in the middle of that.
They won't!
So we're focused on Ukraine, we have troubles at home that need sorting out and our REAL foe is sitting back getting stronger while we continue to spread ourselves thinner and thinner.
We're being so stupid we deserve what's coming.
But the Army's budget just got saved because everyone is emoting instead of thinking.

Consider this a homework assignment for the class.
Many are TRYING (but failing in my opinion) to claim that because I want to avoid involvement in the Ukraine situation, want the Europeans to decide the issue themselves (bigger economy, higher standard of living, better infrastructure, lower crime but lower defense spending) and grow a pair and man up, that somehow I'm wrong.
No.
Those that believe that are wrong.
The US is overstretched. We no longer have the forces to defend every nation on the planet. We should avoid becoming involved in every fight, everywhere.
But freedom they cry.
If you believe that our foreign adventures have anything to do with freedom then you are a fool!
It's money. It's influence. It's flagging power. We're wasting it all. The natives have caught on and instead of our adventures being a net positive they've tilted over to being a net negative.
But even better go HERE and check out our history of warfare.
We've been at it continuously for over 200 years. Think about that. In the grand scheme of things America is a YOUNG country but we've been involved in more combat than most of the world for a longer period of time.
Something needs to change. Oh and one last thing. When every news network both left and right start singing the same tune then you know you're about to get screwed.
Dare to think. Dare to critique. Dare to analyze. You won't like what you see but you'll be better for it.

Russia planning on the urban fight?
Interesting isn't it? Every major force in NATO has talked about fighting in urban areas. Yet all we have for that fight is our MBTs. No Heavy Engineer Vehicles with building smashing guns. No Terminator equivalent. Nothing. The appearance of these vehicle explains why we saw the anti-tank missiles being rushed. It will be fast and it will be brutal...expect cyber to cut off military leadership & missile attacks to kill civilian and military leaders...
Just heard on the news that the order for Russian forces to begin the assault has been given.
Supposedly we will see massive cyber/electronic warfare to cut off military leadership from the forces they lead along with fire from hell in the form of missile and aircraft to kill civilian and military leaders.
Major cities will be targeted for decapitation and forces in the field will be pummeled while Russian mech forces arrive once the barrage has lifted to assault what remains of the Ukrainian infantry.
This is gonna be horrible. Prayers up. The pain will be immense.
Europe is gonna be in turmoil for at least a decade.
We have a new tar baby. We can't get away from European needs/fear/incompetence.
After this EVERYONE on the continent will be screaming for more troops and we'll provide them even though we have OTHER MORE IMPORTANT interests at play.
America is screwed unless we grow a pair and make those that are capable become responsible for their own security.
Sidenote. It is unfair but the Biden admin will pay a price for the past year. First Afghanistan, now this? We're not even looking at the costs of sanctions
Gilday's numbers for the amphibious fleet just don't make sense...

“We need 12 carriers. We need a strong amphibious force to include nine big-deck amphibs and another 19 or 20 [LPDs] to support them. Perhaps 30 or more smaller amphibious ships to support Maritime Littoral Regiments… to 60 destroyers and probably 50 frigates, 70 attack submarines and a dozen ballistic missile submarines to about a 100 support ships and probably looking into the future about 150 unmanned.”
According to Gilday’s list, that force would be about 513 ships with 263 manned combatants, plus 100 logistics and supply ships and 150 unmanned vessels. Gilday told reporters later that the total would include Littoral Combat Ships.
“LCS is in that mix,” he said.
Everything outside of the amphibious ship numbers makes sense. I can see it. It's easily understood. Still lacking against the Chinese behemoth but a reasonable force (interesting that they still fall under the 600 ship Navy Reagan proposed).
But the amphibious ship number.
I don't get it.
The Marine Corps is smaller.
Will have less ground vehicles. Fewer grunts. It just doesn't sing.
With the number of amphibs and the mix you would expect a totally mechanized Marine Corps that is scalable and operating world wide.
The sheer number of Light Amphibious Warships (30 or more...that's quite open ended) indicates that we're looking at excess capacity during a time of strained budgets.
Expect the Army and Air Force to come after the Navy/Marine Corps numbers hard. Expect a big fight over resources and expect the Navy to quickly toss amphibious ships on the altar.
EABO from my chair is as I've been saying. One foe. One region.
The Marine Corps is out of the force in readiness business, out of the expeditionary business, and out of the world wide operations business.
Simply put? We don't won't need all those amphibious ships...maybe they're being setup for Army use?
