Are we finally past the chest thumping? Has anyone pieced together Russian motivations to launch this assault?

I've been reading some of the tweets done by the brains of the Marine Corps I follow on Twitter.

Dead silence on this subject.

Same with the brains in the US Army, US Navy and even the US Air Force.

All are quiet.

The think tanks are all raging and taking up the usual positions that aren't even worth mentioning on my little blog. I won't even touch on the politicians.  They're as useless as most of us think and they're simply parroting each other.

So I leave it to you. What is the motivation behind this attack? Why would Putin roll the dice this hard and why at this moment? What was the flashpoint that made this course of action seem attractive.

We've been told for weeks that Russia would attack.  We were NEVER told WHY they would.

Personally I'd like to know.

Bold? Yes. Heroic? No...not really. Stupid? I think so but you tell me. The battle between an island detachment & Russian Warships.

I'm trying to get the real story on this but it goes a bit like this.

-  Russian warships approached an insignificant island and told the detachment to lay down their weapons.

-  Detachment commander turns up the volume and tells the Russians to go fuck themselves.

-  The detachment is bombarded for several hours and the unit dies to a man.

Some will call this heroic.

I'm sure this stand will make it into modern culture and the story will be spun.

In my mind the reality is a bit more stark. From what I've read (and I'm trying to find more details), they didn't even bloody their enemy.

They simply made a statement of defiance, got bombed into the stone ages, died, and the Russian warships moved on.

Hardly heroic.  In my mind a weird command decision (unless the commander had info that his men would be savaged if they did surrender) that guaranteed his men would die WITHOUT achieving even the simple goal of inflicting damage on the enemy.

In my mind it was a waste of lives.

Like I said.

Bold? Yes.

Heroic? No...not really.

Stupid? I think so.

But tell me what you think.

Note.  From what I've read it appears that someone in Ukrainian HQ put these guys out on a long limb without support, and left them there.

Where is Azov Regiment?

 

Where are these guys?  I'm real curious to see how they performed in combat.  Anyone know which sector they're fighting in?  If they've been seen?  All the SS symbols they wear it would be hard to miss them.

The extreme silliness of deploying an additional 8K troops to reassure allies.

Can we all agree that the US deploying another 8K troops to Europe to assure allies is the dumbest thing ever?

Biden says that Putin will be emboldened.  Why?  Putin laid out his plans, and appears to be accomplishing them.  

More importantly, Biden has laid out our intelligence for the whole world to see (and potentially counter in the future...I'm sure every potential foe worldwide was taking notes), if Putin was about to make a push into NATO (which would be beyond stupid) I'm sure he would have let us all know AND we would be sending over more than Army Airborne and Air Assault.

But the language that the DoD uses is the most worrisome.

"REASSURE"!

We don't need to reassure our allies.  We need to be able to respond to serious threats with quickness.  We need to be able to land a credible force that is able to defeat real threats.

Reinstate the Rapid Deployment Force and get away from this provocative Forward Deployment regimen.

Additionally we need to dump this "reassurance" stance that we take with deployments. 

WE ARE OVERSTRETCHED!  We can't deploy to every country that gets nervous (and it isn't credible).

To summarize....

The deployment of additional forces to Europe is theater.  Some European countries are being alarmist and emotional.

Am I right or wrong?

Ukrainian military disappeared from this fight

It might just be me. But is anyone else surprised at how poorly the ukrainians appear to be fighting. I fully expected the ukrainians to put up stiff resistance. However except for a few pockets they have been MIA. Am I wrong or do you all see it differently.

Russian POWs? The close fight is happening...

Wow. Wonder how this happened. Can't tell the unit by the patches (kinda weird wearing high viz patches in a war zone) but hopefully someone here knows. This ain't Iraq, Afghanistan or Chechnya. They just provided a proof of life. They better get their boys back alive (they'll be bruised for sure, but alive).

Ok. It switched on hard for both the defender and attacker now. They're at war. Things are about to get brutal once soldiers start seeing body bags...

 

Now things are about to get brutal. Artillery is one thing. Airstrikes another. But once you start seeing buddies in body bags the switch get flipped and now its real. Things are beyond serious now. Brutal might be an understatement. Fangs are out and woe to anyone that lands in crosshairs. I had hoped for a fairly bloodless thing here. Hope is fading. This could actually turn into a big fight in the heart of Europe. Amazing.

Follow Marco Rubio (at least temporarily)....he's a walking talking tick tock of events in Ukraine...we can expect he's giving it straight after being briefed!

If dude is gonna give us info straight outta the briefers mouth then maybe we should slam him later and follow him now. He's giving us a tick tock on all events...many that aren't in the news yet. A few more tidbits from this clown. Did this asshat just give us (in the fucking open) an analysis (not his, probably the pentagons) of the enemy's intention? HE BROADCAST THIS IN THE OPEN? Maybe I'm over the top but this seems like not a very good idea. Share it with Ukrainian forces but not the entire world! I'm probably guilty of it but a stage makes people act goofy.

We can't stop him so let's use him.  Seems like a great source to know what's going on shortly after our Congress Critters.

Trust half of what you see on Twitter.

 

Twitter is annoying. Parts of it are absolutely fabulous. Other parts are just CHILDISH, HYPERBOLIC, BREATHLESS, MORALIZING, INFANTILE, IDIOTIC steaming piles of shit. Trust half of what you see there (probably less than half). I have never seen such a group of people raise their fingers in the wind and simply amplify what they're hearing instead of doing an individual analysis of what they're seeing. Parts of Twitter is simply mob action on the internet. Vocalizing without reason and making statements for the sake of a little "like" button. Example? The take below. Ukraine will not lead to nuclear war. A threat of nuclear war was not made. The limits of this conflict were laid out long before Russian troops made their push.

Open Comment on the fighting in Ukraine.

 This is the Open Comment for the fighting in Ukraine.

While we're here can we discuss a few things?  I know how this usually goes but let's concentrate on the following...

1.  The cause of the war.  What was the actual spark that kicked this off or was it simply pre-planned.  Quite honestly due to how news is covered in the US, the background issues on this thing has missed me...and I consider myself fairly well informed.

2.  Performance of the Russian military.

3.  Performance of the Ukrainian military.

4.  The concept of deterrence against a peer/near peer foe.

5.  Analyze leadership of all countries involved - From the US to Russia, France, Poland, UK, NATO, China etc...

6.  Has the UN outlived its usefulness?  It has yet to "prevent" any war launched by a major power, is by all appearances a money exchanging bureaucracy that can't even pass out assistance to poor countries and is a bloated entity that has no visible purpose in the modern age.

7.  Is this action an indication that I was right?  That the US is overstretched?  Many nations are yelling for American boots on the ground but if we had them in Ukraine and US troops had been killed/injured in the assault are we sure that even then we would have gone to war?

8.  Is it time to do a complete review of our theory of war, foreign policy etc...

9.  What will the economic fallout of this action?

 Just riding your bike and death arrives suddenly.  The effort to keep going at the end.  To try and get back up even though it was over is amazing.  Rest in peace to this poor soul.

II MEF Marines offload the USNS Sisler for Ex CR22

 Just plain sad.  II MEF offloads for a major exercise and the pics provided are of a gawd damn Humvee and this F350(?)!  Simply amazing.  Those fucking missiles better work beyond any reasonable expectation.  The Marine Corps is lighter than the Airborne now.  In a couple of years we gone from a lack of shipping capacity to (from all appearances) looking for shit to put aboard ship!  

The 82nd in a few short years will have MORE GROUND MOBILITY, MORE DIRECT FIRE CAPABILITY and PROBABLY MORE TACTICAL MOBILITY THAN THE US MARINES!!!  Oh and they're moving by air, not by ship.

Army CH-47s train aboard USS Portland

If I was running the US Army and was getting geared up for the budget war, the next thing I'd do (after I get my modernization together and going) is to push the SecDef and CNO on the subject of getting a select number of Army aircraft marinized so that they could go aboard ship and stay. Everything it would take to make Army aircraft compatible with long stays aboard Navy ships. What do they call them? Aviation Combat Brigades or something like that? Do that to maybe 3 of them so they could rotate and that would be another step toward getting fangs into the fight in the Pacific. We're seeing a cute little jointness thing going on. If I was in charge I'd push it till it broke. Once aviation is enshrined aboard ship I'd get a couple of infantry battalions into the rotation. Simple. Doable. An easy way to ensure the Army gets a piece of the China pie.
