Modest Proposal. Send Army & Marine Corps pilots to the US Coast Guard for a 6 month rotation to perfect flying in bad weather

Name the military service that flies helos in the filthiest weather on a consistent basis.

It ain't the Army, Navy or Marine Corps.  Its the US Coast Guard. If combat is coming in the Pacific and if distributed operations are gonna be the way to go, with the added drama of having to evacuate people that are injured or in the water in all kinds of weather than making flying in bad weather is gonna part of the process.

Risk is easily assumed when it comes to our own gear and how much we have.  Risk is assumed in these new battle plans.

Not being able to evacuate personnel or save people in the water in bad weather is something that should not be risked. To keep the faith it needs to be worked on in peace instead of ad hoc solutions during war.

China to build training facility in Cuba

What will we soon see?

We'll see Chinese jets flying up and down our east coast and all over the Gulf Of Mexico.

Should we be alarmed?  Nope.  WE have troops stationed a stone's throw (metaphorically) from China, sail our ships near their coasts etc.

Just part of the superpower games.  Congress will wig out but its nothing special.

Kyiv’s forces may be temporarily halting their operations to ‘re-evaluate their tactics’

 via Evening Standard

The Wall Street Journal similarly reported on 17 June that Ukrainian forces “have mostly paused their advances in recent days” as the command in Kyiv re-examines tactics.

Washington-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in its latest update on the war that these reports are consistent with their recent observations of the scale and approach of localised Ukrainian counterattacks in southern and eastern parts of the country.

It added that “Ukraine has not yet committed the majority of its available forces to the counteroffensive operations and does not yet appear to have launched its main effort.”

Here

They go on to add that we haven't see the majority of available forces.

Why?

Because they're trying to keep morale up in the West.

The reality from my chair?

You don't piss away limited resources even in probing attacks.  You have a finite number of tanks, apcs, etc.

I posted a tweet from a politician that said the Ukraine ran into a steel wall.  MANY ON THIS BLOG said all kinds of nonsense.  He was right and so was I.  This counteroffensive has been feeble as fuck.  Pausing is the right thing to do.  Men die in war.  We understand that.  Wasting their lives on fucked up strategy is sinful.

Ukrainian special ops assault Russian trench system

Interesting. I wonder if Western special ops would do this type work. To be honest I hope not. I would expect them to be carrying out deep attacks, destroying depots far behind the frontlines, guiding missile strikes etc.

Everyone is searching for lessons from this war.  Is one of them that Special Ops takes a back seat to conventional forces on this big stage?

Lastly I have to wonder if US special ops in particular has seen an erosion of certain skill sets during the last 20 years.

Everything became raids, raids and more raids.  Except for the Rangers and MARSOC (being the designated raid units) the rest of the community has (or had) well defined roles without much overlap.  That changed, will it change back now that peer vs peer conflict is here?

We need an order of battle for the Ukraine - Russia war

We need an order of battle for this war. A certain Twitter guy became the go-to for info on vehicle losses (did a great job too) but in my opinion that is just a modified throwback to the old Vietnam "body count" metric to see who's winning the war.

An order of battle would give us a better view of info that would actually tell us the current state of fighting.

How many Russian/Ukrainian units have become combat ineffective, reconstituted?  How many have been formed from foreign volunteers or built out of members of units that have been destroyed.

Logistics guys are focused on the number of vehicles destroyed, ammunition used etc.  Its an essential part of understanding the fight and keeping their forces in it.  Intel guys are focused on the units, where they're at and how they're equipped.  They're sweeping social media to get a peek at the moral.  Finally they're watching the fight to see which ones are effective and which ones appear vulnerable.

TLDR.  Anyone doing an order of battle for this war?

If our issues with China isn't part of the Taiwan question then we are fighting to defend the empire.

If we don't support Taiwan independence then what the fuck did the USMC rip itself apart for?

If a potential fight with China isn't over Taiwan then why are we getting ready for one?

Its because this looming fight is about the American empire.  We will have no challengers to the throne!

Everything is propaganda. If not then no one can keep their mouth shut

Just plain wow.

Everything is propaganda.  I kinda suspect this is and its purpose is to serve as a warning to Belarus for accepting Russian nukes.

If it is NOT propaganda then no one can keep their mouths shut about operations.

We heard about the counteroffensive for months.  It was so feeble that we had a hard time figuring out if it actually started or not but it was broadcast straight from Zelensky's office.

Now this.

I saw the name of the guy that's leading this effort in another post but deleted it.  Stupid move.

You want to know the real purpose of special operations in a peer vs peer war?

Sabotage, assassination, sowing fear in the populace of hostile/allied nations and destruction of critical infrastructure or assisting in its destruction by targeting of said infrastructure.

Why we're not seeing special ops more active on both sides is beyond me but I consider it another form of restraint in a crazy war.

If it was a logical war then hit teams would already be on the way to get this guy and kill his "insurgents".

Crystal Arrow 2023

I believe this was a propaganda attack...I do not believe the Ukrainians on this. Not sorry.

Perhaps I've climbed completely down the rabbit hole but I do not for one second believe that the Russians launched an attack on Kyiv while the African delegation was there meeting with Zelensky. What sense does it make? NONE! I do however believe that either the Ukrainian govt, Ukrainian agents or military units linked with Ukraine carried out the attack to discredit the meeting. Additionally I'm sure that this was done to spur this type tweet.

It feeds into the narrative, a false narrative, that peace cannot be achieved and that the only option is continued warfare.

I get it.

War is a money maker for certain people.  The terrible thing is that for the average person its results in either poverty, injury or death. Why so many would cheer that is beyond me but its 2023 and anything I guess is possible.

Ukrainians seem to like the AMX-10RC

Interesting. A high caliber gun that is precise? That is EOS-USA's claim to fame (they enhance existing systems with their electo-optics to push the first see first kill meme) but back on task. If the Army is able to get the 50mm across the finish line. If its lethal enough to kill anything on the battlefield except the most advanced tanks (the claim is it can kill anything except the T-80...would luv to start getting estimations of CHINESE TANKS these weapons can handle!) and if its precise enough then it can even do the urban warfare thing (elevation is supposed to be impressive enough to take on UAVs) then we have a winner.

The Marine Corps is claiming that it can lose tanks because it can engage them over the horizon.  Bold claim but ok.  Still shit happens and you're gonna need a fall back against a combined arms enemy that's able to suppress your anti-tank teams.

A highly mobile gun system can handle flanking, break throughs and other incidents that happen in the fog of war.

Sounds good but at the end of the day it doesn't quite give the satisifaction you would think it would. On the personal (I know for a fact) or state level (I imagine). Turn the war off..

You can slam the African nations but they had a peace proposal that almost turned off this war!

Thanks to Duke 7 for the link! Many of you laugh at the African states for pushing for peace.  The reality is those that know the horror of war are those that are most against war.  Only children, young and old, are in love with the idea of violence for violence sake.

Having said that you better buckle up.  I didn't post it but US birth rates declined BELOW replenishment rates.

THAT IS WHY THE BORDER WAS OPEN.  Both Republicans, Democrats and the business sector wanted new blood.  Long story short on this subject.  The same demographic timebomb that is hitting the Chinese is hitting us.

Life, the earth and the universe itself is all about change.

A king has his reign and then he dies.

The same applies to countries.  I would bet serious money that if we could zoom into the future to see how things are in 2100, I would bet that you would have India as a super power and Africa turned into an economic powerhouse.

Change is inevitable.

They're lowering expectations for Ukraine's counter offensive

 via CNBC

Ukraine has a lot to prove with this latest counteroffensive, having to show its international partners that the continued supply of NATO weaponry is worth it, used effectively and can be decisive in the outcome of the war.

U.S. State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday that the White House would not comment on “twists and turns of the counteroffensive or battlefield updates on what is obviously a very active and ongoing situation. We’ll leave that to the Ukrainian military to speak to.”

RUSI’s Reynolds said that Western-donated weaponry wouldn’t radically change Ukraine’s performance on the battlefield, however.

“I think a lot of the capabilities they’ve been gifted have been useful but the Ukrainian military is still working to absorb a lot of the equipment it’s been given, a lot of it’s been provided piecemeal,” he said, noting that, as such “we certainly shouldn’t have expected any radically different performance based on sort of Western equipment.”

I stated that they launched this assault too soon.  That they should have waited.  Additionally I surmised that it wasn't a call by military leadership to do this now, but by their political masters.  More from the article.

Analysts say there is a concern that Ukraine is under too much pressure to perform for its international partners who are, ultimately, sustaining its military efforts to repel Russia over the longer-term.

“The importance of Ukraine’s counteroffensive is high, and so are the expectations,” Teneo’s Tursa noted, adding that, in this respect, “Ukraine has partially become a victim of its successful counteroffensives in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions last year.”

“The long wait for Ukraine’s latest offensive and the arrival of advanced Western weapons have further raised expectations and optimism, which might prove counterproductive for Kyiv in the long run,” he noted.

RUSI’s Reynolds agreed, noting that “I think expectations were set very, very high ... and I think they were too high.”

Here

Everyone wants to declare Zelensky a great statesman, a wartime leader and damn near a Saint.

The reality?  He's an actor and a showman.

He likes to "move the crowd".

So when it comes to this counter offensive he's done the showman thing and let his arrogance wag his tongue.  Instead of being moderate, informing the international audience and his countrymen that this would be hard.  Casualties would be high and that they should steel themselves to a hard fought campaign, he instead insisted on certain types of weaponry which lends to the mindset that if we have this we can end the war tomorrow.

Back on task.

The placement of this article in a business rag is telling.  For better or worse, our business community is able to push Congress to act in certain that the general public can't.

I kinda read this as a message that they're gonna comeback for even MORE money to aid Ukraine.

The politics of this are getting untenable.

Our cities are sewer fires.  Our infrastructure is trash.  The American people will not tolerate the sending of treasure to Ukraine for much longer when they're dealing with increased taxes, crime, open borders and other non-sense that has to be dealt with here at home.

The Ukrainians boxed themselves in.  Maybe it was foreign leaders.  I don't know.  What I do know is that even if successful the lines will move only a bit and it will take tremendous propaganda to spin this into a win.

My opinion?

This counter offensive now was a Hail Mary shot to end the war this year OR to set conditions favorable to Ukraine to make peace talks possible on their terms.

The sad thing?

I truly believe the military leadership of both Ukraine and Russia want to turn this off.  Any human should want to turn this off.

If you're a cheerleader for this war then be advised.  They have a foreign legion and they're taking men from 18 to 65.  Even if you're at the edges of that range I'm sure they'll accept your service.  Put your words into action.  FIGHT FOR UKRAINE is here (under construction) but they'll put you in contact with people that will instruct you on how to get into the fight.  Put up or shut up. But stop barking at the moon.

Zelensky talking or is it his masters in Washington and London?

Pretty damn arrogant to question their travel to Moscow. Down right insulting to reject peace talks. He wears military gear but ain't living in the mud/dust risking his life. Guess its easy to be bold when you're in the rear.
