A couple of things had me curious about these dudes.
The first is the poles. How the hell could they carry those long lances (Google AI says they were 15 to 20 feet long) while at a full gallop? Well the answer was pretty ingenious. The lances were hollowed out and designed to break on hard impact with the enemy. In a kind of replay back to the Spartan era they were designed to bypass the frontline troops and strike those in the rear.
The next thing was what's the deal with the wings? Again, according to Google AI, there are a couple of theories. They made the riders appear larger. They made a "sound" that frightened enemy horses and troops. They were a defense against lassos that some of the enemy troops employed against horsemen.
I've tried to do a roll call of historians and this is another one of those battles that claims to have saved christianity from being extinguished in Europe.
Long short? Much to my amazement, it appears that christianity and the muslims have been at war for at least 1000 years if not much much more.
The difference between today and back then? Christianity was much stronger as was the call to arms. I think the message is muddled because of modern sensibilities but I have to wonder what percentage of Christians and Muslims see this as a continuation of a long fight or if things have indeed changed.
