So Israel retaliates against Iran. YOU DO KNOW this is all fucking theater don't you???

I don't know what games are being played with people's lives in the Middle East but I do know that games are being played. These strikes and counter strikes by Iran and Israel are nothing but theater. I have never seen a SERIOUS military force telegraph an attack as well as the Israelis have but here we are. If they were serious they would have taken out nuclear facilities. They didn't. If they wanted to cripple Iran's economy they would have gone after their oil and port facilities. They didn't. Hamas is dogshit and the Palestinian people are stupid as fuck for following them but the Palestinians should be advised. They're suffering for people that don't give a fuck. Its readily apparent that NONE of the Arab nations actually care and the same can be said of the Persians. They're a tool and Gaza is the battlefield.

Damn. Fines in a war zone....A neat road sign erected in Saint- Sauveur-le-Vicomte, France in July 1944.

I guess that's one way to make sure your soldiers don't lose their shit....glad to know officers had to pay more...

Are wheeled IFV/APC an evolutionary dead end???

Using this as an example only.  A Leopard MBT next to a Boxer IFV.

Have forces around the world globbed onto a concept just for shits and giggles and haven't actually looked at the combat performance of the thing?

I'm looking at the wheeled IFV trend.

The vehicles are freaking huge.  They're touted as having the same cross country performance of tracked vehicles cross country but most nations are still supplementing them with tracked IFVs.

From what I've seen (and I might be wrong) they're rather awkward in urban environments and the inability to skid steer is definitely a weak spot.

Their main advantage is in long range travel and higher ground clearance for added mine resistance.

But the threat has changed.  Mines are so "war on terror" and the next war will probably be a drone and direct/indirect fire fuck fest.

For US ground forces in particular its a huge risk to depend on wheels when maneuver is the mantra used by everyone.

Mobility kills or denied terrain due to the capability of your force is a deadly thing.

Ukraine pleads for more Western support as Russian drone and missile strikes intensify

 via bfbs forces news

A major Russian attack involving more than 100 drones against 15 Ukrainian regions has triggered a renewed call from Kyiv for more Western support to help defend the nation.

Multiple areas were targeted overnight by Russian forces, resulting in damage to commercial and residential buildings, with at least eight people being injured.

Despite shooting down 78 out of 105 Russian drones and jamming 23 others, President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted more help is still needed to protect Ukraine.

Here

At what point is enough enough?  Is there no limit?  Should western nations empty out their war stock in order to support Ukraine?

“This is [a] drawing showing a large troop carrying Ithacus rocket being launched from the aft deck of a nuclear-powered carrier of the Enterprise class. Ithacus is a Douglas Aircraft Company concept of a rocket which could transport 1,200 troops or 132 tons of cargo at 17,000 mph to any point on earth. Another Ithacus is poised on the fore deck in this illustration. The carrier deck provides a floating launch pad.”

More specifically/accurately, per the always informative Astronautix website:

“The smaller "Ithacus Jr." version would have had an intercontinental cargo capability of 33.5t or 260 soldiers. Douglas proposed to launch two Ithacus Jr. vehicles from an Enterprise-class nuclear aircraft carrier, which also would have produced liquid oxygen and hydrogen propellant from seawater. Power for the electrolysis process would have been taken from the carrier's nuclear reactor: 112MW would have been required to produce 1150t of oxygen and 164t of hydrogen from 1470t of water. The rocketships would be stored inside hangars. One Ithacus Jr. would serve as a troop carrier while the other would deploy unmanned cargo to the same military site. The Ithacus Jr. vehicles would land 600 meters apart to deploy a fully armed group of 260 soldiers.”

Even better, and it puts Mr. Bono’s concepts into orderly context. If anywhere near accurate, this is superlative actually:

“ROMBUS (Reusable Orbital Module-Booster & Utility Shuttle) was a reusable single-stage-to-orbit Vertical Take-Off Vertical Landing (VTOVL) launch vehicle proposed by Phil Bono of Douglas Aircraft Company in 1964.

Phil Bono’s ROMBUS is the basis for an entire family of aerospacecraft, including a single-stage inter-continental ballistic troop transport concept that could deliver 1,200 combat-ready men or 132 tons of equipment anywhere on Earth within 45 minutes.

Military versions of the aerospacecraft were dubbed ICARUS (Inter-Continental Aerospacecraft-Range-Unlimited-System) and subclasses of this design were Ithacus, a troop carrier, and Ithacus Jr., a military cargo and equipment transporter, which will be featured in an upcoming post.

The civilian aerospacecraft was Pegasus, a Saturn V-class intercontinental rocket capable of transporting 170-260 passengers and 13-33.5 tons of cargo at 25,000km/h, or 90 tons to a 560km Low Earth Orbit, or, alternately, transport 172 passengers and their luggage the 12,000 km from Vandenberg to Singapore in 39 minutes.”

Gorgeous work by Ted Brown, a supremely talented, unheralded (as were most contractor artists of the time), and sadly/most likely, marginalized yet further.

Unfortunately, a huge LOSS this time. A wonderful tribute by Angela Carole Brown, Mr. Brown’s daughter, is no longer at the following website, which I’ve linked to in the past.

However, I believe/am hoping the current owner of the website is one in the same, as she mentions her father being an artist. Although there's no additional information provided regarding him or his contributions.

This one hurts, the wonderfully composed ‘obituary’ had additional photos, to include of the artist, and captured what the man was made of…basically, his legacy. AARGH:

See also, although not even the cS gurus knew who it was by, despite being prominently displayed - in the LCC at KSC - at least not as of 2012! It's probably no longer there, and I have a sinking feeling I won't like knowing where it now is. That is, if anyone even knows:

With sincerest gratitude Mr. Brown. Rest In Peace. I’m sorry.

Ukraine is about to get interesting again....North Korean propaganda poster urging Ukrainian soldiers to surrender 2024

Ukraine is about to get interesting.

I wanna see how the N. Koreans perform on the battlefield.  I wanna see the reaction from the EU, NATO and the US.  I wanna see if this changes the equation when it comes to fighting in the winter.

The hawks are gonna scream for full NATO involvement (witness the comments) while the sensible are gonna be seeking ways of turning this off (China/Brazil peace proposal).

Either way this is gonna hit JUST in time for the Presidential election (already voted so it won't influence me at all).

Don't know if this is true but Hamas might be broken in Gaza. Hundreds of terrorists are surrendering after IDF says "surrender or die"

It was a tank round, not a sniper bullet that killed Sinwar (video)

Open Carry (even if on duty in uniform) can be dangerous...you better be about that life!

AAVs and ACVs at Camp Schwab Beach....pics by Cpl. Michael Taggart

U.S. Marines execute an amphibious landing with an Amphibious Combat Vehicle at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 16, 2024. While deployed, the ACV is certified to conduct a wide range of mission sets, including open water, protected water, and land-based operations. Amphibious operations, including the use of ship-to-shore connectors, is a foundational aspect of Marine Corps operations and is critical to remaining the Nation’s premier expeditionary force in readiness. Another Russian Flag Officer assassinated...

When this war is over I would luv to read how the Ukrainians were able to penetrate Russia and kill so many high ranking officers. The weird thing? I hope our military and NOT law enforcement officials are studying this thing. Can you imagine how many of our flag officers could get got if we were to actually fight someone serious? Our only saving grace is that we have so many generals that you could kill 3/4ths of them and it wouldn't affect our combat efficiency.

North Korean Regular Army Soldiers are in Russia drawing gear to join the fight...

I wonder how many Chinese "observers" are located at various command posts & with Russian frontline troops. The North Koreans might be the face but you can bet that China is providing the funding. Between the continous drama in the Middle East and this fight in Europe, the US is having its stockpile of weapons decimated and the pivot to the Pacific once again stalled. WE HAVE GOT TO PRIORITIZE! In this case it would make more sense for the EU to fully fund Ukraine, and the US to take care of the Middle East and do our Pacific thing.
