The Royal Australian Navy will deploy HMAS Canberra on its first international exercise to Hawaii in mid-2016
Deployment seeks to improve ship's interoperability with aircraft and naval platforms from partner countries

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) will debut its first-of-class amphibious assault ship HMAS Canberra (L 02) at the Rim of the Pacific ('RIMPAC') international naval exercise in mid-2016 in a bid to improve the platform's interoperability with other navies, the service told IHS Jane's on 4 April.
The article is behind a paywall, but the point is clear.  The USMC is going to be landing MV-22's and CH-53E's on the Canberra and some Colonel in the bowels of HQMC is going to proclaim this as the best thing ever.

Serious question.  What is the benefit?  What is the goal of this interoperability?  What are they seeking to achieve and how will this make the Marine Corps more effective on future battlefield?

No one has ever asked the question and HQMC hasn't come out and told us why this is a corner stone of exercises like RIMPAC 2016.

Do you get the impression that they're throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks?  Does it feel like they really don't have a plan and they're making it up as they go?  Company Landing Teams, putting Marines on foreign warships, alternate transports to be used as adhoc amphibious assault ships...it all smacks of desperation, not proper planning.
