Admiral Mullen is setting us up for deep defense cuts.

The above video is one in which Admiral Mullen states that the current budget situation is a risk to national security (I must add that this is the same Admiral that stated that Climate Change was a risk to national security....it seems that some will bow to the whims of their superiors no matter what the rank)...

The point of all this is...he's setting up the country for massive defense cuts.

I wondered why they would choose a certain Marine General over a more accomplished rival for Commandant.

I wondered why the SecDef would make such a forceful show of talking about future defense budgets and the role of the Marine Corps.

I wondered why the Acquisition Chief would make a meeting with the defense sector such a high profile show.

Now we know.  Everyone is about to get gut punched.

Remember you heard it here first.

  1. I know you're not going to like this, but I think it could be a good thing in the long run.

It sets our defense policy up for failure, but then looking around the country, tell me what isn't failing right now?

This move will create contrast between this administration and the last (not to mention all future ones). Remember the BushHilter people?!? Not so much anymore...

The world couldn't have had Churchill without Chamberlain.

  2. that's a good point. all this is a bit premature. the Democrats won't control Congress after Nov (except in a lame duck session)....

and after the ass kicking the Republicans got when they were last in office, maybe we'll get some good ole' fashion small government out of the next people that are in washington.

  3. The problem is that that the cuts can cause a world of hurt if a balloon goes up in a major way.

We do need a serious rethink about our whole defense policies though. From what we want to do, how we'll do it, what we'll do it with, and how we pay for it, etc.

  4. As soon as Mullen made the climate change comment, I knew he had had his spine removed. Just a yes man to the current admin.

Cuts must be made, and I would accept these if there were concurrent cuts to social programs that are sapping the life out of our country. But we all know that the money saved from Defense won't go to the debt/deficit if this admin has its way. It will be used for some new entitlement program.

November can't get here soon enough.

me---don't get me wrong, i want reform, i do think defense contractors are screwing the DoD..but in some ways its the DoD's fault too...last minute spec changes on aircraft and vehicles? no wonder the cost goes up!

  6. "Me" hits the nail on the head. A rethink with goals and needs factored in can result in a smaller budget/new ways of doing things.

It's like a patient that needs to lose 60 lbs. Do you sit down with them, discuss a diet & exercise approach, or simply advise them to have their left and right legs removed??

All Washington is capable of now when it comes to reducing is the latter, while the former (of course) is what's called for both sides of the ledger (social and military spending).
