Information Request.

Major Hat Tip to Elgatoso for catching this in the photo.  Can you identify the airplane just in front of the island behind the AH-1W and to the left (as you look at the pic) of the H-60?

It's in blue camo has a red star on its tail and I would assume that its used for aggressor training.  Problem is I don't see it listed in squadron service.

If you can ID the airplane and the purpose it serves and the unit it belongs to I'd appreciate it!

UPDATE 1.

Commenter John identified the airplane for me.  He stated that its an Aero L-29 Delfin and provided a link to an acrobatic team that flies them in the comments section.

OK, I've gotten the aircraft ID, now I need to know why its on a big deck amphib!

  1. it would require an arrestor cable to land on the damn ship, didn't know they were any on those amphibs... Remembers me of designs from the 50's and 60's

  3. Aero L-29 Delfin

military jet trainer aircraft that became the standard jet trainer for the air forces of Warsaw Pact nations in the 1960s. It was Czechoslovakia's first locally designed and built jet aircraft.

  5. There appears to be another one next to it, painted black with yellow "go faster stripes" - must be being transported somewhere.

Found it! Eastern Bloc Aircraft Service: http://www.easternblocaircraft.com/index.html

If you go to their demo flights page
    http://www.easternblocaircraft.com/demo.html
about halfway down are pictures of two of their pilots in front of and in the cockpit of the black aircraft with the yellow and red stripes.

They supply aircraft for movies among other things, so that would be my guess what is going on.

  9. Good info everyone but does anyone have a theory on why its on the Amphib?

Surely we wouldn't be transporting an acrobatics teams aircraft would we?

On a combat ship? That's almost obscene!
