LVTP-5

Below are pics of the old Corps LVTP-5.  They're courtesy of SGT GRIT website.  One thing to notice is that in several of the pics the Landing Vehicles appear to be launched while the LSD is moving at flank speed.  Its rarely if ever done today.  If anyone can provide information on that bit, I'd surely appreciate it.

This is the pic that has me suspecting that the ship is moving at flank speed.  I can't tell if the LVTP is approaching or leaving the well deck but even with 'some' distance from the ship, its still being influenced by the ships wake.

  1. The last few pics on Sgt Grit say it's the USS Austin (LPD-4). Max speed 20 knots or so (the gator satndard). LVTP5 max speed is like 6 knots. So no way it is approaching the LPD at flank speed. It certainly is being deployed while moving a quite a clip. I did not know they could do that. The LVTP's were more boat-like than the AAV though, so it may be something they used to do.
In the last two pics the LVTP is leaving the boat. You can see the litle dome shaped cupola to the left. The box-like structure towards the aft end is the modified intake/exhaust of an LVTP5A1.
What you don't get a sense of though, is how freking huge the LVTP5 is. They had one at Camp Pendlton when I went through MCT many moons ago. You can get like 30 guys in there, and they weight like 90,000lbs. And a front opening ramp. Who thought that was a good idea?
