Hiring our Heroes.

No not late.  Real fucking late.  But I guess better late than never.  BlackFive is reporting that the US Commerce Dept US Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring hiring events for veterans.  Check it out at their spot here.

SIDENOTE.
I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR POLITICS BUT WITH ALL THE LIP SERVICE GIVEN AND ALL THE INACTION TAKEN, I FIND IT BEYOND AMUSING THAT A PRIVATE ORGANIZATION AND NOT A GOVERNMENT ONE  IS ACTUALLY PUTTING 'BULLETS DOWN RANGE' ON THIS ISSUE...I GUESS ITS EASIER TO TALK A GOOD GAME RATHER THAN ACTUALLY DOING THE WORK.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE VETS LOOKING FOR WORK.  ANYTIME I SEE ANYTHING JOB SEARCH RELATED FOR YOU GUYS I'LL MAKE SURE I POST IT.

  1. with respect Sol the government has been helping with hiring issues. All vets get veterans preference in jobs at teh governmental level (feds anyway) and there are efforts for vets with disabilities under Schedule A of hiring authority through OPM. this is OPM vet guide, http://www.opm.gov/staffingportal/vetguide.asp, the problem is the government doest want to force private business to hire vets becuase then politicans would bitch about them interfering in the private sector and more government regulation. also check out: http://www.fedshirevets.gov/, and http://www.dol.gov/dol/jobs/veterans.htm.

  2. with respect Joe.

    BULLSHIT.

dipping into politics just a little, the President was focused on health care while the economy was still melting down. since that time we've seen the politics evolve from excess spending to austerity. the programs that you name are simply carry overs from peacetime. no new effort has been launched to help these guys.

    NONE.

until recently. question for ya...if everything was ok on the VET hiring front then why is the veteran unemployment rate higher than the national average. why are people with leadership skills, higher educational achievement and having been responsible for more than flipping a hamburger having a hard time getting hired? and lastly why did the President speak on the issue just last week and come up with new initiatives???

  3. well the question is what do you do? what can the government do to help these guys, your right austerity measures are becoming deeper and hurting alot of people, and unemployment is unacceptably high for all sectors, but that doesnt solve the issue of what to do about it. the main issue is what job skills do they have that are marketable. retraining is a huge issue and more funding needs to go into college education (GI Bill and other services are improving, and colleges are trying to help more), but the problem is just that, unemployment is a huge issue among the entire population. if you have someone that is former infantry, artillery, etc, their skills may not be marketable to the places are hiring these days, technical experts, healthcare, business etc. also see the president wanting his jobs act to help vets, and is already pushing job issues: http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=65809, congress is moving on a vets job bill now, passed the house with over 400 votes, will likely be passed in the senate with a comfortable margin, but any differences will need to be decided by the committee, my guess is it passes by the holidays.
