Blast from the past. A-5 Vigilante.

The A-5 Vigilante.

When it looks right it is right and the Vigilante looks right.

Even today.

I can only imagine what one of these planes could do with modern avionics...engines and fly by wire controls!  The Navy would have a long range two man strike bomber that it could use in medium threat areas.

If any airplane could perform the modern day F-111/F-15E strike mission from a carrier then it would be a brand new Vigilante!

But enough spitting in the wind.  More on this beauty is here.

  1. As you said Sol, when it's right it's right. I know some designs of yesteryear are not capable of the stealth requirements of today's fighter/bombers, still it makes me wonder if we were to retool for these types of air frames, how much money would be saved.

  2. yeah Phil...i'm still a huge fan of the F-35 but i'm not convinced that the US Navy is best served by a single type air fleet.

so yeah, i think you're spot on. i bet we could save a ton of money.

  3. Give her a real bomb bay too. Not what she had where the bombs got poop'ed out of her behind. It never worked I guess.

  4. I actually was thinking along those same lines Sol, a single type fleet. However, I really started thinking about how many type of airframes are flying today, and there really are a lot of them. I do understand what your saying though about a single type fleet. All an enemy need do is to figure how to defeat that one craft, and were sunk.
