Light anti-AFV vehicle...

The JLTV issue continues but I saw this pic on the Survivable Combat Vehicle website and noticed that they have mounted an ATK light weight 25mm cannon onto one.

This is the real 'revolution' in military affairs that the theorist talk about but are unable to implement.  A humvee sized vehicle able to engage and defeat AFV's several tons heavier (if the proper ammo is equipped).

A motorized Marine Infantry Company would have the ability to range far and possible engage heavier forces or defeat larger infantry based forces with a little more out of the box thinking.  Granite/Textron...I like it!

UPDATE:
Specs on the ATK-25 mm gun can be found here....

  1. one hell of a can of whoopass in that :)

  2. Interesting. This would be an excellent vehicle to provide close up fire support as well. Too bad it won't be able to fight MBTs.

  3. with all the anti-tank weapons organic to an MEU it shouln't have to.

  4. Awsome weapon system to mount to a vehicle like this I would only mount a few keeping the majority .50 cal just because of ammo. Throw a few tow variant crow systems in a group and you have a very quick force that can dish power out hard.

Oh and granite/textron really? Next time when I ask if I can take pics for a military blog about your vehicle and equipment to put a great case for your product versus the jltv make your mind then. Getting a call from my 2ND MEF G2 was isr what I needed today

  5. i wanted so much to blog about that but i wasn't sure if you wanted it in the open...so i'll just comment here.

that is so FUCKED UP! G2 definitely has their dick warmers in a bunch of places ... still being on the outside its also kinda funny...i see the big green wiener is still operating at max capacity.....

  6. I'm not really worried about G2 they did their job, they just wanted the marines out of the pics. The MAJ was great about the whole thing.

  7. still calling bullshit on even that part of the story. you have Marines showing up in pictures all over the net and its no big deal...G2 is acting like these guys that are working on a program are secret operatives or something...heck, even special ops is taking a bow for the camera now...i'm glad the Major was awesome (always good to see) but someone in that shop got their panties in a bunch.

  8. 25mm HEDP isn't exactly the best for killing light armor.

  9. yeah but an M791 Armor-Piercing Discarding Sabot should do the trick

  10. why would you pick that round to comment about????

  11. The LW25 uses the 25mm round from the OCSW, NOT the M242 used on the Bradley. It doesn't have a APFSDS option, only HEDP.

  12. i know for a fact that they've developed high velocity armor piercing for this caliber 25x59mm....somebody's making it somewhere.

my contention stands...just the wrong projectile mentioned...so you get credit for that but overall...i'm RIGHT!

  13. There was an idea that was bandied about a while back to make a tripod-mounted M230. Yup, that's the gun from the Apache. It's recoil proved too much for accurate sustained fire from a manned tripod, but the above stabilized mount should work just fine. The benefits of the M230 ASP (as it was called) are several.

    1. Parts commonality with the Apache cannon
    2. Ammo commonality with the Apache cannon
    3. Much higher kinematics and lethality vs a 25mm cannon.

  14. Sol, I'd be interested to read aboit that round if you can find a link. As far as I know ATK developed the only line of 25x59mm, and there's was a HEDP.

The problem with that round is it's essentially just a HV grenade. So I doubt a KE variant would be very effective.

  15. SpudmanWP,

The 30x118mm definitely has higher kinematics than the 25x59mm, but it is not close to the 25x137mm (LAV-25, Bradley).

  16. an aborted Army product had a high velocity 25x59mm shell to be used in the anti-armor role...even so more google-fu is required to find the puppy i'm lookin for so bear with me.

  17. Of course i meant 30x113mm, not 30x118mm.

  18. 25x137mm APDS seems more and more marginal these.

IMHO, 25x59mm APDS doesn't seem worth the trouble. 25mm HEDP probably has marginal behind armor effects, but at least can penetrate 1.75-2" of RHA.

  19. When it comes to shaped warheads (eg HEAT, HEDP, etc), the diameter is more important than the velocity (eg the bigger the cone, the higher the penetration).
