Thanks for the link Lucas!

Chile is sporting Leopard 2, M-109A6's, what appear to be upgraded Marders and upgraded M-113's?  They're a country to watch.

  1. The idea of Chile as a "military power" isn't news to us Brits. They are a great people. It mist really hurt to be Argentine with the Brazilians going from strength to strength, Chile going from strength to strength, and all the Argentines can do is piss it all up the wall. Argentina with her resources should be practically a "European" country. Good post Sol.

  2. I would agree with the above sentiment entirely. While in the Royal Navy I had the good fortune to work with the Chilean Navy while they learnt how to use the Type 23 frigates they had purchased from us. Talk about smart and professional! I will always remember a Chilean Naval officer telling me that if the Argentinian's ever stepped out of line they would get a 'whack'! Amen to that my Chilean friend and more power to your elbow......

  3. Yep, about 25% of Chile's copper mine export money is earmarked for defense.

So the Chilean military has a constant stream of cash to rely on for modernization.

I also hear Chile is about to buy another 140 Leopard 2s, and is looking to upgrade them to the A5 standard.

  4. Chile has strong reasons to have such military power.

It has border problems with the argentinians - It was too close to be in war because the Beagle Channel in 1979. Has also problems with Peru and Bolivia. The bolivians until today doesn't accept the lost of their exit to the sea in the Pacific War (1879-1883).

  6. Now that's a country to watch out for on top of Brazil as well. My bet is that Chile and brazil will become South America powerhouse in terms of Military and economic development. Just watch their development within the next 10 to 20 years down the road. It will be pretty interesting to see.
