How much law enforcement is in DC????

I'm watching the briefing on the DC shooting and I've got a question.  How many law enforcement agencies are in DC???  I'm counting...

1.  FBI
2.  ATF
3.  Secret Service
4.  Uniformed Secret Service
5.  Park Police
6.  Capitol Police
7.  US Marshals Service
8.  Homeland Security
9.  DC Police
10.  DEA
11.  ICE
12.  TSA (and I can't make out the rest of what's written on the raid jacket)

That's just the Law Enforcement Agencies.  Not counting the quasi-intel/security agencies.  If we count those then we're adding...

1.  CIA
2.  DIA
3.  US Army Intelligence Agency
4.  US Navy Intelligence Agency
5.  NSA

Oh and if we're looking at "special units for security in a national emergency" then you'd have to count "8th and I" that are slatted to provide security at Camp David and can be used in the city if ordered and the Army ceremonial unit.   I'm not sure if the USAF and Navy units also provide the same function.

Someone better deconflict DC with a quickness.

  1. All those fed agencies, except for Capital Police, Park Police, and uniformed Secret Service are in every major city, working various task forces. Locally you can substitute local police, county sheriff, and state police, and in big cities, Port Authorities, Transit Police, Schools Police, Housing Police, etc. DC may have more bodies, but the number of agencies is insane no matter where you go.

Meanwhile, almost anywhere you go, there is ONE Fire Department. Funny how crime problem is treated so differently than fire.

    1. good point but let me ask you this. if you just look at the federal buildings and ignore the city, i'd bet you have a much higher concentration of law enforcement in a much smaller geographical area than anywhere in the free world.

i'd bet they have a couple of battalions worth of law enforcement to cover a small area.

what is it usually (i'm just pulling numbers out)...1 LEO for every 1000 citizens? in DC i bet for the federal buildings its more like 1 citizen for every 100 LEOs.

    2. As a DC Native, I have heard all this before. My father was Metropolitan Police MPD not DCPD~ # 4 is subset of # 3. BTW you left off both the DOD Police, and the separate Pentagon Force Protection Agency The former being mostly bldg guard service, the later have LEO duties).

Yes there are a lot, yes there are some overlapping jurisdictions which is mostly a good thing, yes the total number is high. BUT many agencies have missions that are NOT specific to LEO or FP.

Actually, the cooperation & coordination has increased since 9/11 except for the FBI who just muscle their way in anywhere~ Homeland Security is obviously boss of several listed. TSA has nada outside National Airport~ BUT HSD does in fact operate a significant command and control center in NW DC and it plays in these sort of evolutions inside DC.

Check your map Capt David is a long way from DC environs. But the USMC CBRD unit does come to town.

Numbers need to be better. DC population of around 3/4 million is increased by workers from surrounding area (WAG to over a million). Not to mention visitors and those passing thru.

  2. Yes, "deconflict" them, ans you would have the unique opportunity to watch all this shooting live, out from your own window.
