Russia’s Central Military District (CMD) is to receive ten new armored "Tiger" vehicles, Colonel Jaroslav Roschupkin said Friday.
"Tolyatti Special Forces will receive ten new armored SPM-2 GAZ-233036 ‘Tigers’. In accordance with the 2011-2020 state arms procurement program, the vehicles will be delivered by the end of 2014," Col. Roschupkin said.
Earlier this year, Col. Roschupkin reported that the CMD was to receive 24 "Tigers" by the end of 2014.
Last year, Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said Russian Armed Forces’ demand for “Tigers” had reached unprecedented highs following the upgrades to "Tigers" that eliminate the previous advantages of Iveco’s “Lynx” light motor vehicles.
The SPM-2 GAZ-233036 “Tiger” is a high-mobility multipurpose military vehicle manufactured by MIC, a GAZ Group division, at the Arzamas machine-manufacturing plant.
It has a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can carry up to nine personnel or 1.2 tons of cargo. (Cihan/Ria Novosti)
If I remember correctly Iveco made a splash when they announced that the Russian military would be using their vehicles.

Views of the incident in Crimea and with the above news article, it appears the experiment is over.  Russia is buying Russian again...especially when it comes to armored vehicles.

On a sidenote, I haven't heard whether or not the Typhoon 6x6 has actually entered service with the Russian Airborne Forces.

  1. Deciding factor here is probaby cost ,on web costs go at 88k$ for Tiger and 145k$ Lynx but in them so the contract for 1700something Lynx 30Bilio roubles ,same contact for tigr is valued at 10 bilion.

  2. The previous Defense Minister, Serdyukov, was big on forcing Russian companies to compete with foreign companies hence the Iveco Lynx, Israeli drones and the Mistral amphib ships. After the poor performance of the Russian Army in 2008, he wanted Russian companies to get the message that they needed to have better quality and more modern technology.

Serdyukov was the guy responsible for a lot of the improvement we saw in Russian forces in the Ukraine. All those 'green men' were driving in Tigrs.

  3. The russians defeated Georgia in 2 days And basicly toured around the other 5 days despite being initially outnumbered. The air force half assing it and totally not being prepared. Nevermind other troubles. overal not bad for the so called "poor performance" .

Anyway both Tiger and Iveca are considered to be bad vehicles Even the Tigr-M is not satasfactory. satisfactory. So in the meantime they are buying the cheapest vehicle which are the Tiger's. While a new vehicle is in the pipeline. As far as your answer solomon. There are currently 50 pre-serial kamaz-63969 typhoons and about 50 pre-serial Ural-63099.

Also that picture BTW is of the old kamaz-63969 typhoon variant.

    Current veriant looks like this

As you see it's shorter and less armour. among few other tiny differences.

  4. We invaded Grenada and defeated them in 12 hours. Nonetheless, there were a great many lessons to be learned from our "victory".

  5. Well orders of Tigr had be canceled in 2012 I think, they are no longer in product for Army only for internal sec forces. They want to replace Tigr with VPK-3927 Volk a superior design. No wonder, it's mainly a highly modification of Tigr with all those fancy new tech they buy from west.

There is some rumors that it was design with help from French... don't remember but it was probably Renault. They already design a power pack for new Russian wheeled IFV.

    1. No, just no.

Tigr-M is currently went in to production for the army. VPK-3927 Volk is a different niche. What fancing new tech and no french had nithing to do with volk.

Power pack for boomerang is of russian origin. You are thinking of Atom a joint French-Russian project for export to middle eastern countries.

    2. Again, only rumors but I read somewhere that Volk borrow many advanced things from Iveco. Mainly in department of protection, but that's are rumors, can be true, can be false. You sure that Tigr-M is back in to full production run? I know only about some small batches for Specnaz (24 vehicles for Specnaz unit in TaliatyƄsk)

ATOM can still be part of Russian army, but you right I mistake it with Boomerang.

  6. Funny seeing the Indian Flag behind the Typhoon, maybe it was during a product demonstration.

  7. Correct me if i am wrong but is Russia doing its very best to copy/paste IVECO designs and parts ? I know russians love to copy old italian designs especially in the auto car/truck segment so is this more of the same ?
