LUGANSK, July 15 /ITAR-TASS/. Militiamen of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) have killed about 100 Ukrainian army personnel, destroyed five tanks, two infantry combat vehicles, two armored personnel carriers and a mortar battery over the past 24 hours during a battle for the Lugansk Airport, the LPR press service reported Monday.Read the entire story here.
“In this way, the Lugansk residents have managed to keep airport blockade. The enemy retreated to positions occupied a day before. The localities of Rodakovo, Alexandrovka, Yubileyny remain under LPR army control,” the press service said.
Before noon on Monday, Lugansk was shelled by the Ukrainian military presumably from the Tyulpan heavy 240-millimeter mortar. Shells landed in an area of private houses, a house was completely destroyed and one person was wounded.
The LPR said 17 of its fighters are blocked in the area of the radar, the road leading there has been mined. Ukraine’s Air Force delivered an air strike on LPR army units near Lisichansk, no one was injured. Return fire shot down an aircraft, the pilot ejected. A Ukrainian Air Force transport plane was spotted closer to noon above the locality of Izvarino. It was also shot down by LPR army units.
The LPR press service said Ukraine’s armed forces opened fire at Lugansk’s southwestern neighborhood Mirny from Grad multiple launch rocket systems, causing casualties and destructions.
If you cut the claims by both sides in half...personnel killed, vehicles destroyed and aircraft shot down....
Then one thing is obvious.
This conflict is MUCH bigger than the conflict going on between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Why it has faded from the front page is annoying to me. Our news media, state dept and leaders are all infatuated with the "new" instead of what is the important.
The Middle East is trashed and while I personally believe that we should support Israel to the Nth degree, I also believe the Israelis can handle it.
The bigger threat to our economy ... by extension of preventing Europe from descending into a serious recession which would have knock on effects for us .. is the issues in the Ukraine.
This is getting ugly and no one is paying attention.
Yes, there is a real force on force fighting in former Ukraine, as I hoped before. Ukrainian army is a top-dog – more solders, aviation, more and better armored vehicles, excellent infrastructure (including service and recovering plants for all line of material), huge stockpile of ammo, equipment and material, soviet-age, of course, but it is more then enough. But they have lack of well trained infantry, able to face-to-face fighting in circumstances of town’s buildings. So Ukrainian army attack supply lines of rebels and cut off them between Lugantsk and Donetsk . But rebels strike back and Ukrianian army has some loses, not crucial IMHO.

Most interesting news – rebels downed Ukrainian transport plane An 26 – reportedly with BUK at 6 000 m height. And rebels declare they have Su-24 “Grach” assault plane. Very interesting.

Sounds more like the rebels in Luhansk are feeling the pain from the choke hold the Ukrainian mlitary have on the city. They are surrounded no airport and the gov forces are holding both main highways to Russia while they have crushed the links they had west. Russia is worried told by their recent accusations of gov forces attacking Russian border towns threatening retaliation, in a effort to get the gov forces to pull back from their blocking positions.
ReplyDeleteO is not going to do anything more viable than window dressing show boat crap he has been doing. This is exactly what he meant when he got caught hot mike telling Medelev to let Putty know after the election he would have more flexibility. The only thing holding Russia back from outright attacking E Ukraine is they just don't have the ability to attack, take, and most importantly occupy Ukraine. Crimea is a small isolated very defensible territory, E Ukraine would be impossible to defend against constant Ukrainian resistance from the west and if they tried to hold down the hole of the country it would be magnified. Putin wouldn't survive gutting his financial reserves, pissing off the gen pop with heavy real sanctions, while putting a half million conscripts (from that pissed off gen pop) into the meat grinder of Ukraine. No Putin will try the long shot of "rebel" aka covert SOF maybe if he things he can get away with it (dangerous with to high of risk of losing escalation control) some limited strikes but not full alt.
