Operation Summit, the first helicopter-borne landing of a combat unit

"Foxhole Relief -- A 1st Marine Aircraft Wing transport helicopter takes out a fresh load of replacements for the 1st Marine Division at an advance base in Korea. The troop drop was into the front lines, while Marine Corsair fighter-bombers furnished air support to keep enemy guns quiet on a nearby hill position." Photograph and caption were released by Commander Naval Forces, Far East, under date of 22 November 1951.   2. That's a very cool piece of photo history. The use of the helicopter is one of the things that most changed 20th century war operations. Youngsters today can probably barely imagine operations without it. Even units who most train for extended, light missions have the helicopter somewhere in their toolbox, if only for extractions.

    1. Notice the caption states they used it in conjunction with fires. Not on it's own...even then the corps understood helicopters needed support
