Y-20 hi-rez pics. via Chinese Military Review Blog.

Hate to say it but this plane is sexy...oh and make sure to follow that blogger.  They're one of the few English language Chinese military sites.

  1. One thing you can see on the picts is relatively low bypass engines, it seems jet engines continue to be China's weakpoint.

  2. Does it look very much like a C17 to you? Especially the rear of fuselage...

    1. i said that originally but someone came up with something even better. its a mix. it has C-17, IL-76 and even a bit of the A-400 (around the nose area). clearly the Chinese decided to take the best of what was out there and blend it together. still, the gauntlet is being thrown down. if they ever do what we're slow on...actually working out there parachute and Marine forces to work together in forcible entry then you would see something really impressive. a fast moving airborne force backed up by mechanized Marines coming from the sea. quite honestly Japan has no chance at defense of the disputed islands if the Chinese get it together.

    2. In transport planes form follows function more than in most other airplanes that is why most look very similar , idea that everything is copied and/or based on stolen tech is simplistic knee jerk reaction made by people that do not have a slightest clue.

One thing that is interesting is how rapidly cinese are developing new platforms but on the other hand these low bypass turbofan engines are kida 70-80's tech , clearly illustrating that copy paste is not as simple as stupid folks think.

  3. Its payload capacity is not bad either at 66 metric tons. C17 can haul 77.5 metric tonnes whereas A400 has only 37 metrictonnes.

    The latest chinese airborne IFV ZBD03 weighs just 8tons with 8 crew + 1 30mm gun + 1 7.62mm MG. I imagine Y20 can easily carry Two ZBD03s.

    1. A400 is like Hercules a tactical airlifter with limited strategic airlift capability , while C17 is a strategic airlifter with limited tactical airlift capability, Y20 better fits later category.

    2. the C-17 was born from the comp between the YC-15 and YC-14. it was sold as being able to perform like a tactical airlifter with the reach of a strategic one. the comparison between the three airplanes is appropriate especially since the A-400 is ACTUALLY being compared to the both planes.

  4. The biggest weakness with China is metallurgy. Take some of their tanks, for instance, put them on their paces and you'll see their engines wear out faster than anyone else. Aerospace engines are even more complicated (and delicate) than tank engines. Aerospace require special alloys to withstand high rates of vibration and heat. There have been cases where operators of Chinese-made aircraft would remove and perform a near-overhaul of the engines after a few flights.

Why do you think they're "asking" RR, PW and GE to set up an assembly shop in China? Getting the right materials and elements are not just "it". You need specialized foundry and finishing equipment. It is still undermined which parts China is still catching up/stealing/copying or developing.

I am still trying to track down the document I read but someone's basically said that China has two "categories" of war stock. Category "A" are products which passed QC and are "destined" to the country's armed forces (front line). The other purpose for the Category "A" are for "demos" and FCS or First Customer Shipment. This is the stunt, apparently, the Chinese pulled when they supplied the Qataris MANPADS. After the first shipment were delivered, the users told the Qataris, "Oh great. They work beautifully. Can we have some more." So when the Qataris ordered MORE, the Chinese then supplied them with the Category "B" stocks ... and the Chinese laughed all the way to the bank.

    2. The Chinese are smart.

US is unwilling to supply superior MANPADS to the Syrian rebels and has pressured other western countries as well. This means if the Qataris need MANPADS they need to source from Eastern suppliers. Russia is a no-no. North Korean is also a no-no. The only one left standing is China.

The Chinese knows this and they also know that whatever happens the Qataris ain't going to go back to source more war stocks from China. So China sees this as a "one-shot-deal". China wins. They got money. Made Russia happy. Syria and Iran are happy.
