The Fund For Peace (FFP) Fragile State Index.

I usually just make note of these types of "rankings", identify countries that are listed as being at the High Warning and above level and move on.

It does pay to observe the countries listed near the bottom of the list.  They're no brainers and probably going to require international intervention in the near future.  If I was an operations planner and had responsibility for those areas I'd be dusting off contingency plans just in case.  Never hurts to be prepared...

Check out the full listing and methodology for the rankings here.

  2. Pakistan only just marginally better than HAITI??!!! WTF. Pakistan is a mess but I didn't realise it was THIS big of a mess.

I wouldn't give two hoots about it, it is reaping what is has sowed HOWEVER, let's not forget this is a nuclear armed nation and has, apparently, the fastest growing nuclear arsenal on the planet.

If this doesn't make you sit up and take a deep intake of breath I don't know what would.

  3. How the heck is New Zealand not the best? Maybe I'm being bigoted because I live here, but we don't have a whopping great big nuclear power next door who are trying to do their best to destabilise the region. The rankings are useful though, plenty of countries to stay away from. Not that I was planning a holiday to South Sudan anytime soon...
