Russia is winning the Covid-19 war for minds and hearts...

First Italy and now us?  The Russians are winning the Covid-19 war for minds and hearts.

The problem?  I think the whining and belly aching about supplies running out in a few weeks set us up for the propaganda win for them.

I'm not a critic of Russia.  I like keeping tabs on them and I want to know more about their weapon systems.  I've also stated that there was no reason for them to be enemies.  Engagement not alienation (especially because so many interests connect).

But what of those critics and hardline Russia-phobes?  How do they respond to this?

What else can the military do if this coronavirus gets worse? Deploy CBRN, MPs & Combat Engineers/Sea Bees...

pic from 75th Ranger Recruiting Instagram Page...
I ran across the above pic and it got me to thinking.  What more can the US military do if (and I'm not certain we haven't already hit peak on this thing...the dates don't match what we've seen in other countries as far as infection spread is concerned...quite honestly we should already be at hundred of thousands of deaths already) this thing get's worse?

The DoD/White House can pump up the volume.

Treat this thing like a wildfire event and go all out balls to the wall.  Deploy CBRN specialist to train medical personnel to wear hazmat outfits so we don't lose them to the virus...then setup decontamination stations when their shift is over.

Deploy MPs to backup local police depts.  Deploy Combat Engineers/Sea Bees to quickly build tent cities or rehab buildings to isolate the infected.

Why do I say this?

Give me 2 solid freaking weeks of going all out against this contagion.  Get medieval on it.  Tell the American public that for 2 weeks we've got to get tough on this thing and tell that they're gonna have to buckle down and tough this thing out.

What does that mean?

Nationwide stay at home.  Nationwide curfew from 6pm till 6am everyday unless you're in an absolutely essential field (medical, law enforcement and other first responders...military...and that's it!).

It's get tough and go all out or we muddle thru for another two months of this madness.

Give me a short sharp kick in the nuts instead of lingering pain.

Question. With the coming of "Force Design 2030" is every Marine A Rifleman or is the NEW Marine Corps different?

Simple question.

With the coming of "Force Design 2030" is every Marine A Rifleman or is the New Marine Corps different?

No agenda with this but I'm trying to figure out how the legacy of the Marine Corps applies going forward.  From my chair this new thing makes a break with the past and takes us toward a different (and unforeseen) future.

What is the ethos of this New Marine Corps?  What is the rallying cry?  Apparently they're not Riflemen, Storm Troopers, Shock Troops etc...instead it appears that you're either a MLRS Crewman, swinging with the Wing or MARSOC or you ain't shit.

Does this seem like a silly question?  I hope not.  What will distinguish the Marine Corps from the other services if our primary mission isn't forcible entry but instead long range missiles and fleet air defense.

Note.  I realize that this post is even more disjointed than usual but I'm hoping you can read between the lines on this one instead of simply tossing stones.  If you have an idea I'd love to hear it.

Note 1.  I just realized that this post once again asks a question that is yet to be answered.  Who/What is the Marine Corps?  What is our reason for being now?  Do we really have a role with the adoption of this force design that can't be better served by Army long range artillery (of all types...cannon and rocket), Navy anti-ship missiles deployed from mobile Burke class destroyers instead of shore batteries, Fleet Air Defense any better than what the Carrier Air Wings all provide or close air support in a manner that is different/unique in comparison to what the USAF does?

By losing the world's best combined arms team what are we gaining.  What are we losing and is it worth it or will this lead to our demise?

Note 2.  Do you realize we just threw away the past two decades worth of ship building with this new concept?  The San Antonio Class, already controversial because we decided an LPD, SHOULD BE AVIATION CENTRIC (talk about batshit crazy), we vacillated between making our LHD first aviation centric to such a degree that it didn't have a well deck and then putting it back in and now with this thing probably gonna take it back out again!  We demanded what was once called an MLP because we needed a connector so we could launch surface assaults from 25 miles out and then 200 miles.  We told the Navy we also needed more Expeditionary Fast Transports and I have yet to hear how they fit into any of this nonsense. But of course instead of taking a beat and getting our bearing we've decided that we NOW NEED smaller amphibious ships that are expendable.  It kinda illustrates where the Marine Corps has been for the last decade plus.  Lurching from one idea to the next.  Once we had a steady hand on the wheel.  Now it appears that we're gyrating from idea to idea and don't know where we're going or how we're gonna get there.  What happens after the coronavirus shakes out.  Will we suddenly see that we can't afford to change course to the degree outlined?  How do we manage that?

S. Korean Marines select their new attack helicopter...

View this post on Instagram
Republic of Korea Marine Corps reportedly select MUH-1 Marineon’s armed variant for its Marine Attack Helicopter (MAH) program over the Bell AH-1Z Viper and Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian. ROKMC intends to procure 24 attack helicopters for its recently-reestablished Marine Aircraft Wing through the MAH project, which is expected to cost ₩800 billion ~ 1 trillion | $660 million ~ 825 million. Attack helicopters acquired through this project would escort MUH-1 Marineon utility helicopters during amphibious operations. ROKC ordered a total of 28 MUH-1 Marineon helicopters. MUH-1’s delivery had been delayed for about a year due to a fatal crash caused by a faulty part delivered by Airbus Helicopters. According to the early report which broke this news, those involved in the project deemed it was “more cost efficient” to develop armed variant than to acquire brand new attack helicopters. This is disappointing since a dedicated attack helicopter is much more survivable, manoeuvrable, and generally more efficient than an armed helicopter. Even the project name specifies for a Marine “Attack Helicopter” (상륙공격헬기) over an armed one. Source @rokarmedforces #southkorea #marinecorps #attack #helicopter #ROKMC

This is evil but funny.

Magpul Mags with recharging ports (USB)...

The "New" Marine Corps will probably buy 100K.

Marine Corps trots out a fluff piece to explain the sacking of tanks and the move to long range rockets/uavs...

via Marine Corps Times.
The Corps’ decision to divest of tanks, cut ground cannon artillery and light attack air platforms has stoked some criticism. Tanks historically have had success in high-end and urban warfare for decades boasting devastating firepower highly lethal to ground forces.

But tanks and armored vehicles have had trouble surviving against the threat of precision strike and the plethora of drone and reconnaissance systems flooding conflict zones across the Middle East.

For recent evidence, a Turkish launched operation targeting Syrian regime army troops in late February decimated more than a hundred tanks and armored vehicles, dozens of artillery pieces and hundreds of Syrian forces, according to the Turkish National Ministry of Defense.

Turkey posted videos highlighting a mixed role of drones, Paladin artillery systems and aircraft pounding Syrian armor from the skies over the course of several days. The Syrian army appeared helpless to defend from the onslaught of long range systems. (SNAFU BLOG note...a USMC MAGTF would have had MLRS, Marine Air, Cannons and would only lack ground based anti-air systems...a future whatever they call the upcoming abomination will have long range missiles but I've heard no talk of anti-air systems...well light weight systems on JLTVs but that's it) Even tanks camouflaged by buildings and bushes were no match for sensors and thermal imaging watching from the skies.

The problem is exacerbated by the number of sophisticated anti-tank systems flooding counterinsurgency conflicts across the globe and access to long range drones once only in control by state actors are now being operated by militia groups.

In Libya, the Libyan National Army has the upper hand in its drone war with the UN-backed Tripoli government. It’s equipped with an alleged UAE-supplied Chinese drone known as the Wing Long II that boasts a 2,000 km range through a satellite link and is reportedly armed with Chinese manufactured Blue Arrow 7 precision strike air-to-surface missiles.
Here.

Wait.  So let me get this straight.  They're using the fight in Syria as an example of why we need to change our entire force into something unrecognizable?

What happened to the vaunted, unbeatable Marine Air-Ground Combat Team?

They Syrian Army operated as tank units WITH attached substandard infantry.

Additionally do you see how fast they dumped the once big talking point for the Pentagon about fighting in mega cities being the new "hotness"?

I just don't get it and this article doesn't do a thing to clear it up.  It's a good thing for the Commandant that this virus drama is playing out cause he SERIOUSLY needs to do some messaging to get this thru.

I never in a million years thought I would say it but we could be looking at 2 perhaps 3 (if Berger can't turn this around) failed Commandants that pushed the Marine Corps all over the map and couldn't lay out a clear direction for it.

Yeah.  Unbeknownst to anyone the Marine Corps might simply be suffering a leadership crisis.  I so wish for the 80's and 90's when we had a series of Commandants that had a plan developed, followed it thru to completion and then saw it effectively perform in combat.

Country folks aren't welcoming City critters into their communities...

“Deputies have learned that there is a general belief by some island residents that the Cripple Creek Residents are supposed to be quarantined because they came here from another state and could have COVID-19,” the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in Maine said in a Facebook post.

“Whether someone is a Maine resident or not, they have the right to free movement and anyone who infringes upon that free movement is potentially violating the law,” the post said.

The man and his two roommates have been living in Vinalhaven for about 30 days since coming from out-of-state, authorities said. Several towns in Maine have asked seasonal residents and outside visitors to self-quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Portland Press Herald reported.
Here.

Ya know to be actual and factual I can sympathize.  You can't understand this point of view (and I'm not saying its right...just that I understand it) of someone who lives in a rural community and then sees his area fill up with people that aren't from there, look down their noses at people that live there and then expect to be treated like kings even though common courtesy is beyond their understanding.

We've talked about this but quite honestly this is nothing if this outbreak continues for much longer.

You WILL have New Yorkers, New Orleanians, New Jersey-ites, etc...fleeing to rural areas and the reception they receive will be less than welcoming.

If they're found to be carrying the virus I can actually see structures being burned to keep it from spreading.

Two more weeks will be ok.  Another two months and its mad max deploy Marines onto the streets of America time...and even they better be up on their squad tactics.

Things go bad enough in the USA and what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq will look like child's play.

THIS IS NOT A HOPE but an honest appraisal of things.  Convince me I'm wrong.  I'm calling it now.  If this goes past April 30 then civil unrest WILL be the next crises we face.

Side note.  This is why the calls to "listen to scientist" irks me so much.  They're experts in a field of research but MOST don't know squat about human behavior.  This time Trump was right.  The cure could end up being as bad as the disease IF THEY DON'T DO THIS RIGHT!

Ya know if masks are an issue why aren't we going full throttle?

If this virus comes roaring back this fall like I'm betting (alot of experts too) then it'll be time to break this bad boy out.  What I'm trying to figure is why nurses in NY City aren't hitting DoD stocks to get this up and running.  This is a full NBC rig and can be decontaminated.

It's much more bulky than the N95's but if they're serious about keeping medical personnel safe then why not?

Time to check my filters...

FUCK! This shit is gonna go till at least the end of April...

Jesus.

Watching the President's news conference on the coronavirus and this shit will continue till the end of April.

FUCK!

The Northeast tri-state area (arrogant bastards), along with other major population centers are wagging the tail of the entire nation.

Irritating.

I wish Trump would man up and declare a quarantine of those hot zones and let the rest of us get on with it.

Convince me I'm wrong.
