We are so intertwined trade wise with the Chinese that there are strong businesses constituencies that do not want to rock the boat, the public is tired of long lasting conflicts, and the Chinese hold a great deal of our debt.

ReplyDeleteIn any case I think the paragraph you highlight sounds worse out of context, the article itself makes some good points about growing militarism and nationalism taking hold in China, I think the author's point was that 'appeasement' to the political leadership (who is presumable more stable minded) is better than pushing back and providing ammunition to the hot head demagogues in the military
That being said, the title and last paragraph are a bit stupid, when I saw the headline this morning I refused to read it because I thought it was garbage

Should China fear the US? No, but a nuclear Japan? Yes. A reunited Korea or a frightened S. Korea? Hell yes.
An Australia that feels under the gun? Definitely.
Oh and as far as the US is concerned, they better hope that the cultural elite that has bent over and allowed China to insert its dick in their ass maintains its grip on power. "The masses" here in the US have been ready to stomp a hole in that backwater country for years.
