Appeasement is the proper policy towards Confucian China???

via The Telegraph.
The correct statecraft for the West is to treat Beijing politely but firmly as a member of global club, gambling that the Confucian ethic will over time incline China to a quest for global as well as national concord. Until we face irrefutable evidence that this Confucian bet has failed, 'Boltonism’ must be crushed.
Appeasement, your hour has come.
Wow!

Wow!

Wow!

Before any action is taken...after we have acquiesced to every demand...the pacifist want even more.

Wow!

If you feel like being highly pissed off then read the whole thing, but remember, I warned you!

  1. We are so intertwined trade wise with the Chinese that there are strong businesses constituencies that do not want to rock the boat, the public is tired of long lasting conflicts, and the Chinese hold a great deal of our debt.

  2. I doubt the Daily Telegraph can be called pacifist by any stretch of the imagination

In any case I think the paragraph you highlight sounds worse out of context, the article itself makes some good points about growing militarism and nationalism taking hold in China, I think the author's point was that 'appeasement' to the political leadership (who is presumable more stable minded) is better than pushing back and providing ammunition to the hot head demagogues in the military

That being said, the title and last paragraph are a bit stupid, when I saw the headline this morning I refused to read it because I thought it was garbage

  4. A Confucian China? WRONG. Most of Confucianism was beat out of PRC society/mentality in a decade-long carnage called Cultural Revolution (1966-76).

Today's PRC is a peculiar brand of [Red] Capitalistic Nationalism.

  5. It used to be that Liberals used to compare us unfavorably with Europe(they still do). Now they are in the habit of comparing us unfavorably with an authoritarian government.

  6. @ Drake1

Would it help if the "Liberal" candy coated the messages and served them with a hug?

Politics, politics, politics. When will the Americans stop playing politics and start to focus on policies that actually make sense?

    "Liberal" & "Conservative" -

FUCK THEM if by their words or actions they keep the US drunk in its self-delusion.

  7. You sound like you should join the no labels movement anon.

When you find a policy from the Republican and Democratic party that actually makes sense let me know.

Until then I will vote for whatever party that keeps the other moron party in check.

  8. Anonymous. China does capitalism better than the US? Bullshit, they steal, lie, reverse engineer and have no imagination.

China will fry in hell and don't realize that all its doing is reviving old fears and animosities.

Should China fear the US? No, but a nuclear Japan? Yes. A reunited Korea or a frightened S. Korea? Hell yes.

An Australia that feels under the gun? Definitely.

Oh and as far as the US is concerned, they better hope that the cultural elite that has bent over and allowed China to insert its dick in their ass maintains its grip on power. "The masses" here in the US have been ready to stomp a hole in that backwater country for years.

I love it and it'll happen.

Please read this story, I did not even know about this until I read about it on a blog. Makes my blood boil to think they got away with this, that the White House shills allowed them to get away with this...

  15. I have no idea what Jesus what do.

Its not relative to this conversation.

Besides I'm an old Testament kind of guy. You know the type...you bring a knife, I bring a gun...you punch me, I slit your throat.... you try and cut me---I put a 9mm bonded hollow point between your eyes and take joy in watching your head deflate...

So any discussions of what my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ would do if faced with this Geo-Political situation is not relative.

Besides, he also said "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's"...
