17 counts of murder.

Thanks Joe for sending me this article.

via Yahoo.
Pentagon officials said Thursday that they expect Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 38, to be charged on Friday on 17 counts of murder, among other lesser charges.
The charges "are expected tomorrow," a U.S. official told Yahoo News Thursday night on condition of anonymity.
Hmmm.

This is gonna be a tough case to prove.  I wonder who's leading the investigation.  Army CID or has the FBI rode in and claimed jurisdiction.

Either way, the crime scene has been tampered with, the SSGT is claiming a lack of knowledge and his prior traumatic brain injury is going to be a factor in determining guilt.

Don't get me wrong, if he did it (and by all appearances he did) then he should be punished.  But if there were ever a case of mitigating circumstances then this case has it written all over it.

My opinion.  Your mileage may vary.

  1. i dont know about you Sol but i have ALOT of problems with the thought of trying this guy in theatre. They have him back in the states but are they going to send him over there? where are they going to get the jury pool from? desk jockey officers or those who have been on multiple tours? seems like that will make a hell of a difference. If he did it and was of clear mind when he did it then yes he deserves punishment, but i think alot of this is like Abu Ghraib, while a few people were clearly responsible directly but was a failure of monumental proportions all the way up the chain of command (including civilians) and many just not giving a shit, when will they be punished?

  2. the administration would never make the mistake of allowing the Afghans to put this guy on court.

never. especially in an election year.

that doesn't mean that they won't go to trial with an expected outcome. i worry about a sick man being held responsible for something that he might not have had control of.

oh and yes, if this happened in the US and if the guy wasn't a Soldier i would want him to get the electric chair.

but one thing disturbs me greatly. everyone is making a big deal of the Koran's being burned but ignoring our AFghan 'allies' killing our guys in cold blood...not the Afghans we're fighting but the ones that are suppose to be on OUR side.

  3. Sol, your exactly right, and thats why i still have to believe mental health had to be an issue here. We know he had TBI issues, and if you are constantly having to fight your enemies but also worry about your friends, having to live in that kind of situation for months and many tours would cause great stress and as amazing as our fighting men and women are, EVERY person has their breaking point. when you cant tell your enemies from your friends, time to go. He does seem to have a competent lawyer so he will make this not go away easily, and i think you will see him hit hard the military medical system, but i think they need to have it closely examined, its sad civilians over there had to die, but theres nothing we can do about it now, but it does mean we can make sure we treat our men and women properly. You said in a previous post mission first, welfare of people second, well i think we have come to a point the mission isnt worth the risks to our people, time to flip it!
