The Spying Kestrel.

via The Telegraph.
The kestrel was discovered by residents of Altinavya, a village in Elazig province, wearing a metallic ring stamped with the words “24311 Tel Avivunia Israel”. Suspicious that the bird may have been on a spying mission for the Jewish state, villagers turned the bird over to local authorities, according to Turkish media.

So great was the level of concern medical personnel at Elazig’s Firat University initially identified the kestrel as “Israeli Spy” in their registration documents. Intensive medical examinations - including X-rays - determined that the bird was, indeed, just a bird. There were no sign of microchips that might transmit information back to Israel, local media reported. The kestrel was allowed to fly off after authorities determined there was no need to press charges.
Yet the incident shows the degree of paranoia and xenophobia regarding Israel that exists among large segments of Turkish society. It comes as talks between Turkey and Israel over compensation for families of those killed in the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident have stalled.

Eight Turks and one Turkish-American were killed on May 31, 2010 when Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish vessel carrying aid to the embargoed Gaza Strip.

Ties between the countries suffered until United States President Barack Obama brokered a reconciliation between the two sides during a visit to Israel earlier this year.
Uh.

Wow.

The only thing that gives me pause about the story is that animals probably have been used in some weird fashion to spy on other countries.  I just don't have the imagination to think of the possibilities.

  1. Have you heard of the soviet «anti-tank dog»?
    Or the american «incendiary bat»?
Worst thing is that they were true...

    1. well weaponizing an animal is easy compared to making it a spy tool. especially considering that those were generally chaos weapon-animals. but to get some animal to spy and to have it spy on a particular target is alot harder.

  2. For a morbidly amusing read, look into what the CIA called the Acoustic Kitty.

  3. The saddest thing about this is the stupidity of the people who found the bird. Who in their right mind would think that just because an ID tag has a country's name on it that it must be spying? Worse still, what "spy agency" would use identifying information anyways?

As we say in the US.... Hillbilly Stupid.

  4. The Navy trains dolphins and other Marine Mammals (not the USMC variety) in California.

Having said that, when I read this story I thought this was going to be a metaphor LOL

  6. The trouble with that perspective is that 20% of the population of Israel is Arab and they are full citizens, vote, serve in the legislature (about 10% of all seats), and have served in the cabinet and Supreme Court.

Israel also withdrew from Gaza in 2007 which is ruled by Hamas. Thus the only place the phrase "apartheid" can be applied is the West Bank. In 1988 Jordan renounced all claims to the West Bank. Until 1967 it was part of Jordan. In 2000 Arafat rejected, without making any counter offer, the best deal the Palestinians will ever get. But yeah you're right Israel is the real problem.

    1. You are retarded, of course only 20% of the population is Arab after over half a century of oppressive Jewish dominance. Yeah just conveniently look over the fact that until modern history the region was practically 100% Arab. And not all the Arabs in Israel are citizens and even those that obtain it are still treated as second class. For instance an Arab can't get holidays for Muslim holidays since Israel is a Jewish state. South Africa also granted suffrage to certain blacks that met their high standards, I guess that means they weren't really apartheid after all huh?

And the fact that Israel withdrew from Gaza is irrelevant seeing as how they ghettoized the entire fucking region and prevent the free flow of goods to and from there. Jordan's claim of the West Bank is irrelevant since it was PALESTINIAN land originally, not Jordanian. And Arafat is NOT the representative of all of Palestine so his rejection is completely irrelevant. That is like claiming Al Sharpton represents all black people, completely ludicrous. Oh, and never mind the fact that since then Israel has been stealing Palestinian land by colonizing it with Israeli trailer parks right?

Just fuck off JIDF, you kike scum.

    1. nope. never heard of the acoustic cat either though it was a pretty funny read. i'm amazed they didn't try it with other animals. but back to the issue of dogs. a spy dog? in the Middle East where they don't treat dogs well? i have trouble believing that one.
