Basing agreement with the Philippines? What are we getting ourselves into?

via 24 Hour News.
Manila - Heavy clashes have broken out between Philippine troops and Muslim militants trying to regain control of a captured camp in southern Sulu province, leaving 14 Abu Sayyaf rebels and one marine dead, officials said on Wednesday.
Military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala said fighting that began late on Tuesday continued until early morning on Wednesday, with the militants attempting to regain control of an Abu Sayyaf training and storage camp and in Patikul township that was captured by government troops.
Marine representative Captain Ryan Lacuesta, citing intelligence reports, said the clashes left 14 rebels dead, while one marine was killed and 19 were wounded.
Zagala said troops are securing the rebel camp they captured on Monday.

Militants from the group of Abu Sayyaf leader Radullan Sahiron are expected to launch more attacks and the military will continue to use mortars, howitzers and attack helicopters to protect it troops there, he said.

The Abu Sayyaf had links to international militant networks, including al-Qaeda, but a US-backed Philippine military crackdown has weakened it considerably in recent years.

US Army Special Forces might have jacked up the operation in Mali but they did it right in the Philippines.

So why are we establishing bases there?  I'm personally beginning to doubt whether that's such a good idea.  The Philippines have had a low level insurgency which occasionally hits almost all out shooting war for decades now and it is showing no signs of getting better.  Quite honestly its looking like its getting worse.

Deterring China should not include us getting involved in someone else's insurgency which will lead to another NATION BUILDING FIASCO!  The US military wins the war but always loses the nation building part (civilian wishful thinking).  Lets not make that mistake in the PI.

    1. my wording is terrible. when i said the SF did a good job in the philippines it was with regard to there work on the global war on terrorism and the TERRORIST in the PI.

i forgot that most Filipino's consider the terrorism problem to be an import from Indonesia.

      my apologies.

    2. If I were a ChiComm planner I'd be supporting any and all insurgents in the Phip/Indo archipelago.

BTW no one seems to have noticed that the missing Malaysian flight gave the ChiComms an excuse to stooge out their boomer patrol areas in the Indian ocean under NATO cover. I wrote at least three years ago that we should be looking for a ChiComm false flag to get their forces into the Malacca area. I reckoned a ChiComm bound flight shoot down by terrorists out of Malaysia was ideal. ChiComm marines then inserted under UN cover to stabalise the situation.

I got that wrong but the pre planning stage in the general area for ChiComm big moves south circa 2020 are on schedule. Those Chicomm Marines must be fed up with excercises by now!!!

  4. Personally, I think I'd be more worried about gung-ho PH coast guard or navy personnel starting another shooting incident out at sea than I would be about the MILFs.

  6. One word describing why China.

The insurgency I don't think has anything to do with US basing rights. China is the idea for the bases so you are talking training, Subic, and maybe some airbase prepping. Us bases will not be in the South were the insurgency is. Philippines is very strategically located in reference to China and it is the southern horn of the 1st island chain.

    1. Indeed, the basing agreements are for the Subic Bay Naval Base and the Clarke Air Base, nothing to do with insurgents.

  7. Well, in the case that we do get involved in this insurgency war, I think there is a distinct difference between this and Iraq. There are Filipinos that are actually willing to fight and combat these Islamic insurgents. The Iraqis just did not give a shit. If we were to get involved I think it would go a lot better than our previous insurgent fights because the Filipinos are a different breed than our usual allies.

    1. The Iraqi's do give a shit about Islamic Insurgents. Or at least they used to. Before "The Coalition of the Willing" blitzkriged through the sand dunes and over the euphrates, there WAS NO AL-QAIDA in IRAQ. Gassing Kurds or not, those Baa'thists just could not stand Hardcore Islamic Loonies there. Its like AL-QAIDA follows where ever USA goes. Spooky thought.

Due to a funding problem triggered by V-22 purchases, Japanese government abandoned the indigenous development of its UH-1 replacement helicopter and opted to build a militarized version of existing foreign civilian helicopters selected from a contest. The candidates are AW169, EC145, and Bell 412.

Contrary to a popular perception, Japan's defense budget is growing at the slowest pace of three East Asian powers, with the increase in naval power funded by cuts in ground forces. This is why Japan is seeking to buy off-the-shelf helicopters for the UH-X program and is seeking a foreign partner to share the output of the F-3 program, preferably the US. Likewise, Japan's supersonic anti-ship missile program is moving at a slower pace than Korea's rival supersonic anti-ship missile program, which will be operational by 2018.

Japanese MoD to choose commercial platform for Huey replacement
Kosuke Takahashi, Tokyo - IHS Jane's Defence Industry

The Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans to purchase modified commercial helicopters to fulfil its cancelled UH-X multipurpose helicopter requirement, local media has claimed.

The Nikkei newspaper reported on 29 April that the MoD is set to modify a yet-to-be-chosen civil platform with identification friend or foe (IFF) systems and radar equipment.

It plans to buy around 150 UH-X utility helicopters as a successor to the Bell/Fuji UH-1J Huey that is in service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

  9. There are no US basing agreements with Philippines. According to the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), US troops will rotate through. There is a constitutional provision which prohibits the establishment of “foreign military bases… or facilities” in the country. There will be no permanent presence or base by US troops in the Philippines.
