Amphibious Combat Vehicle 1.1 (ACV 1.1)

BAE just put out the above video and supposedly there is suppose to be an industry day later this week.  Additionally HQMC is putting out a bit more information on how the upgraded AAV and MPC will work together (like how they're going to have to increase the size of the AAV battalions).

It all points to politicking for Dunford to continue the MPC/ACV 1.1 project.  I'm not sure he'll be swayed.

It all depends on that 900 pound gorilla in the room, the F-35.  If it turns out to be as cheap as we're being told...AND...its maintenance costs aren't back breaking then maybe (but I seriously doubt it).  Additionally the CH-53K flies in December and is going to gobble up funds soon too.

My guess?  The AAV will continue for another 20 years.  Just a reminder of what we were told.  Check out the vid below...

  1. I am wondering (as I put my old Combat Cargo hat on) where exactly they will fit an "upsized" AAV detachment onboard current amphibious shipping? Seems to me there is a lot of ideas but the space is just not there. We currently have two "carriers" (what else to call them...no well decks) USS America and USS Tripoli with no space or capability to launch them. Which leaves the other ships; LSD and LPD. What is the landing force commander going to give up on the precious conncetors (LCU and LCAC)? Space is finite. Even if not utilizing a "carrier" the current crop of shipping used for a MEU/ARG is jammed to the gills with equipment and still some gets left behind. What are they giving up to make this happen?

The biggest source of large items on the ship is the Arty, with all the 7-ton trucks to tow and replenish the guns. Next would be the CSSG with the trucks required t okeep the three "B's" (beans, bullets, bandaids) flowing. What, as a CLF, are you willing to sacrifice so that you can get these things on current shipping?

I always joked that one of the mods we will soon see on these ships is a trailer hitch on the back to tow the barge to carry all the other toys.

    Space is Finite.

    1. Deck space sans F-35 with the mighty deck Crane.
Lift AAV, with crane, sit it in the water.
      Just kidding, I think.

  2. I asked Gunny, "Gunny where are the AAV's?"
Gunny looked thoughtful then said, "Marine didn't you take swim qual at P. I.?"
Then he said, "In the water men, we got a beach to take!"
    I said, "Oh Shit!"
