Why have camo uniforms been turned into a seasonal item?

Marine infantrymen with the III Marine Expeditionary Force make their way to a compound held by the Guam Army National Guard who are acting as an opposing force Sept. 20, 2014, during the island seizure portion of Exercise Valiant Shield 2014 at Tinian’s North Field. The Marines were transported from Okinawa to Guam and from there to Tinian. Valiant Shield is a U.S.-only exercise integrating Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps assets, offering real-world joint operational experience to develop capabilities that provide a full range of options to defend U.S. interests and those of its allies and partners. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. D. A. Walters/ Released)

You probably look at the above photo and you might say "hey, its just a Marine doing the Marine-thing"...you might say "ok, they're getting back to jungle warfare"...you might even say "that M27 looks sweet"....

I look at it and wonder why camo uniforms are suddenly a seasonal item instead of what they were designed for...to help Marines blend into the environment.

I hope the next Commandant releases the hold and gives local commanders the choice of what uniform to wear based on conditions, not an edict from HQMC.  Amos has done alot of silly stuff but a seasonally based wearing of uniforms was just INSANE!  It comes with having a jungle/temperate climate and desert uniform.

You want one style to fit all then climb on the multicam option.  You want to have a distinctive Marine uniform (and I do) then deal with having some Marines have faded deserts or jungles and sparkling new of the other type.  Besides, isn't that what the uniform allowance is for?

  1. We've had it too easy for too long. It's going to take a real knock-down, drag-out, lose-a-few-battles war to recalibrate the US Military's priorities.

    1. Exactly, you are right, as usual.

The military is going to find out that initiative, innovation, and traditional infantry skills are more important than having high speed, high tech optics and 3,000 dollar M27s or any other such technological wunderwaffe. That overly complex weapons will be useless liabilities and utterly impotent when fighting against an enemy employing large numbers of simple, robust systems while being very proficient in using them.

I mean, jesus, with properly applied camouflage in the form of face paint, camo netting/burlap, and painted weapons, even if wearing something like OG107s or khakis, I can fucking be camouflaged miles better than these marines.

  2. Commanders have discretion to change uniforms for training needs. This is a failure in common sense, or more likely, the command didn't think the exercise was worth the effort to go the extra mile-which is just as damning in my book.

    1. Second.

Also no facepaint and it looks like tradtional cammies worn with a MTV, something the SYSCOM already tested and rated as a failure because you cook the Marines inside their own uniforms and armor. You need something along the lines of FROG suits and plate carriers with only front and rear plates.

    2. Fuck SYSCOM. The reason the MTV, Vickers Sling, ACOG, and the next retarded thing, the "Enhanced" Combat helmet exist in the Corps. The People at SYSCOM need to get out of the "we need special just made for marines gear" and learn to buy proven off the shelf products.

  3. Amos was clearly jealous at how badly the Army botched Marpat by coming up with their ACUs, so no he's going for the retroactive fail to outdo them.

And he's left a lot of peacetime chairborne commandos in charge of regiments and battalions instead of certified commonsensical warfighters, so the Corps will be weeding these idiots out for another decade.

  4. This is damning proof that the US Marines and Army have lost their way in favor of large scale mechanization. They have gotten lazy and forgotten the hard lessons learned about light infantry tactics, which is kind of important for the refocus towards the pacific.

Where the hell is the face paint? its like the Marines and Army forgot that such a thing ever existed. It is absolutely critical for breaking up the feature of the human face, which is the most recognizable thing everybody sees on a daily basis. Face paint is supposed to be applied on the hands too, or wear gloves. Anything is better than being bare handed.

Where the hell is the camo-netting/burlap for the helmet cover? perfect shapes such as helmets and heads are capable of being spotted rather easy. Burlap and additional camouflage should be applied.

Black as a base color for infantry weapons is fucking stupid. Stupid. All weapons used by infantrymen should be camouflage painted or at least coated in FDE/Coyote from the factory. Black weapons stick out like sore thumb.

Desert camouflage in the jungle? do I need to elaborate how stupid this is?

On the account of the "high speed, whiz bang" ACOG with a reflexive optic mounted on top and M27, there is too much of a focus on high tech gear rather than the basics that make infantrymen so effective.

Are there any old school marines and army infantry out there? or has the politically correct landscape chased them away?

    1. Face paint is hard to apply and even harder to remove.
Causes skin rashes, and is not required for training as it's expensive.
Face paint mostly faded away after Desert storm.

Now, look at the picture, see what I mean? It's a picture taken by a Marine Photographer (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. D. A. Walters/ Released) Most likely for Marine Corps Gazette, Leatherneck Magazine or Stars and Stripes if not for a news release.
This could even be for the MEU year book or cruise book.
It's posed, as in OK you Marines in the Company Office get your gear and fall out over there in the bushes for a Photo Op.
      Real Ops, real training?
Very different, for one thing they would be filthy with dirt everywhere.

    2. I'm saying look at the Marines fingernails, they are not even dirt filled for Crixus sake.
      This is a posed Photo.

    3. I think it is a posed photo. Good point

      For the others, I disagree.

skin rashes, hard to apply, and hard to remove is irrelevant compared to the advantages of camouflage (and ive never seen skin conditions) and the fact that it is literally life or death.

Expensive? not remotely. If a force has the fucking money to buy ACOGs and M27s, they have the money to buy fucking camo paint.

Train like you fight to win? anybody?

  5. I recall the Tropical Khaki uniforms worn in a freezing cold environment because it was summer service A and C at HQMC Quantico per USMC uniform regulations.
    Jungle requires jungle Cami.
NOW, I also recall EXOTIC DANCER Ops, being attacked by aggressor forces who were Marines who wore Sateen OD ute dungarees with a long sleeve Khaki shirt with brown side out helmet covers or bare steel. to make them uniformed differently than Marines.
These could be simply the way to tell who is the aggressor and who is not for training only.
