  3. French Marines, not to be confused with French Naval Infantry (actual Marines). French Marines (called Colonial Troops) are Army units that would deploy to put down colonial rebellions, the name was changed to sound less imperial.

  4. WHAT! I PUT FRENCH ARMY DOGS ON MY PAGE!!!! naw just joking. its cool and i didn't know that. so French Marines are called Naval Infantry and not Marines?

  5. According to wikipedia they started as Navy Marines but got transferred to the Army to kill rebel scum in the 1900s. French Naval Infantry are basically Fleet Security and SOF.

  6. If they are French, why the M-4 not FAMAS?

  7. My assessment--
    1. There isn't enough money thanks to the BCA is the (boring) story.
    2. So there are canceled programs, short-funded programs and 13 unfounded programs.
    3. Apparently the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and the Marine Corps Forces Strategic Command, which General Glueck commands, despite the fancy titles do not include aircraft, just a bunch of ground vehicles and stuff, so the $1.3 billion going this year to buy useless F-35 prototype planes is untouchable.
    4. Glueck, with all his feeble monotonous jargon, ain't no Chesty Puller, but then nobody is any more (except Solomon and he isn't in).

  8. there is more to come on this story Don. i'm running it all down and the phone was glued to my ear and the keyboard almost melted from over use. suffice it to say that i'm getting a peek behind the curtain that i can't fully detail, is fascinating and disturbing at the same time and shows BCA is playing a HUGE role in this. a post is coming up on the implications but its hurting necessary programs like the ACV.

is the F-35 to blame? still running down budget docs. personally i suspect that it is, but i'm tired of making the accusation without definitive proof and i'm looking at the J-Books to see what i see.

  9. The briefing for the Senate Armed Services seapower subcommittee was titled: Marine corps Modernization, but it turns out that this three-star is not responsible for Marine Corps modernization, but primarily only for ground vehicles (is what he talked about).
    A three-star? I don't get it.
It's a waste of their time for senators to listen to this boring low level of discussion full of complaints, Marine Marketing and petty discussion of vehicle companies., IMO.
An officer at his level ought to be dealing with macro budget numbers and large issues, not on refurbishing vehicles for two amphib companies. Go for the big picture.

  11. The Troupes de Marine have been created by Cardinal de Richelieu in 1622. They were named "Troupes de la Marine" (Navy troops) to serve artillery and rifles onboard ships and onshore as well (see the battle of Rio with Duguay-Trouin, the opium wars, etc.)
They are "actual Marines" despite of their transfer from an independent service (attached to the Ministry of the Sea and colonies) to the War ministry in 1900.
Since that date (mourning) they used to be the only intervention units with Foreign Legion. As French forces shrink, the whole Army drink the Marine milkshake and is tasked to provide intervention troops. Colonial wars and changes in the organisation might have changed the look of that fruit, it tastes still the same: actual Marines, proud of that. And they dislike to be confused.
To be sure, check 9 Marine Infantry Brigade, amphibious unit, the legacy is still living.
The Navy has only guards for their naval bases or SOF.

  12. French "troupes de marines" are sometimes packed onboard mistral like USMC. They historicaly coule have been translated to marines instead of naval infantery because they weared marine blue uniforme in their first iconic battles, like in 1870 war.
In contrary to usmc, french marines operate light tanks instead of heavy, and don't ne specificaly used for ambassy protection. France hasn t money to keep some regiments on mistral everytime but it happend sometime.
French marines have some parachute régiments, which two, the 1st and 3rd are SOF. They have hk416 and 417.
