Supacat, Rheinmetall and SCISYS partnership showcases new High Mobility Integrated Fires Capability
News release here. This is the new hotness. Auto mortars on high mobility vehicles. I hate following trends because most of the time they're just plain wrong. Not in this case. The USMC should have adopted Dragon Fire long ago but didn't. It's not too late to resurrect the system or develop a new that's adaptable to our current/projected force structure.
Never doubt the power of 120mm mortar shell wrecking your enemy!
The Hong Kong Social Media Battle. China pushing law & order vs Protester pushing freedom from oppression.
The people of Hong Kong watched in disbelief over the weekend when riotous protesters went on a rampage of arson, vandalism and violence in the heart of their city.— China Daily (@ChinaDaily) September 10, 2019
But posts exposing these senseless acts were glaringly absent on social media. #HongKong #香港 pic.twitter.com/onpH2ohcJz
Interesting. The Chinese are obviously (at least from my chair) aching to put down the protests in Hong Kong. Additionally it seems that they're feeling that the ground hasn't been properly laid for such activity.
China Daily IS WITHOUT A DOUBT an arm of the Chinese govt and pushes their narrative.
I have no problem with that.
What I find curious though is the complaint they're making that the coverage has been one sided.
I thought China would have acted by now. I was wrong. What comes next is in the wind and its swirling.
There is only one good thing coming out of this incident. We know now that all is not well within that country. THERE ARE domestic concerns that must be addressed by leadership.
This is a front that the US should exploit. Domestic unrest can blunt foreign activity on their part and turn attention inward.
If we were smart we would forment such unrest in a bid to halt their military buildup. This is an opportunity we should not let go to waste.

Trump canceled a secret peace treaty meeting at Camp David...his thoughts are spot on...
You can despise Trump but you can't question the wisdom in this statement. The Taliban either endorsed, or couldn't prevent an attack in Kabul. Either of those two options mean that talks are unacceptable or worse, a waste of time.
The reality is that this nation is tribal and will continue to be at war. We can't fix it. It can't be moderated. We only have two options. We can either continue to participate in this violence (losing lives and treasure in the process) or we can choose to leave.
Any hope of a peaceful outcome is probably wishful thinking.
Time to extricate ourselves from this cesspool.
US & Turkey begin joint patrols/safe havens in Syria?
I am very unsure of this policy. As a matter of fact the only thing for certain is that we're gonna have US troops caught in the middle of hostile factions, potentially hostile factions, factions that can be best listed as frenemies...Firat’in dogusunda Guvenli Bolge teskili kapsaminda TSK ve ABD personeli Akcakale’den Suriye’ye girerek ilk musterek devriye faaliyetine basladi.— Turan Oguz (@TyrannosurusRex) September 8, 2019

Think about it.
US troops will be between Islamic Radicals who supposedly want to overthrow Assad but will kill an American just for shits and giggles, Hezbollah that's roaming the countryside, HAMAS that's roaming the countryside, Turkey that's acting like a crackhead--pivoting from Russia--back to us--to Iran--etc.., Iran that's acting like a meth head doing the same, Syria is a definite enemy (and for good reason from their point of view), Iran is obviously hostile and finally Russia is about as good as it gets for a rational actor in that neighborhood and they have their own agenda.
I don't know why but the modern day State Dept and Dept Of Defense love these weird entanglements that can't lead to clear cut victories...just fights for the sake of fighting.

Mi-38VP & Mi-38T At MAKS2019
Note. I really should have hit coverage of this event a bit harder...
So much for the theory I've heard tossed about that the Mi-38 wouldn't have a military version. Russia procurement (from what I can see) revolves around the idea of incremental improvements while developing replacement systems.
With that being the case its hard to figure the critique that they have weapon systems in development for a long time.
The best US analogy would be if we had done the F-35 differently. If the plane was being developed normally while at the sametime we continued improvements of existing aircraft we'd be in a much different place than we are now.
We'd have whole fleets of our 4th gen fighters with AESA, the latest helmets and other tech in the fleet while the F-35 was being perfected.
Unfortunately the disaster that was the procurement of the F-22 (truncated), B-2 (truncated) and other examples throughout history pushed the meme in the minds of planners of concurrent development/production.
On second thought it isn't the Russian system we should emulate but rather our historic procurement model.

Seizing airports is cool but ports are the secret sauce to robust logistic support...
A quick and dirty while I feast on college football.
Seizing airports is cool. It's the fashionable thing in the US Dept Of Defense. But its not the secret sauce to robust logistic support.
If you want to go beyond the visual and head into the realm of the actual and factual then the US Marines, US Navy and even the SEALs/Special Forces should pivot completely away from airport seizure and instead focus on port seizure.
Once again we're looking at a massive HA/DR event in the Bahamas. What will get the most gear ashore? Not airlift but rather sea lift.
Before Commandant Neller left office there was a bright point where he talked about getting back into the port seizure game. Unfortunately after it was stated we saw almost nothing. No papers on the subject in the professional journals, no talk at exhibitions...nothing.
That's a pity.
Since the disaster in Nepal we have seen the USMC attempt to pivot from ship based HA/DR to aviation based help.
From my chair the results have been much less than optimal.
We allowed a concept to take precedence over providing robust life saving functions. All because we emphasized aviation. All in the effort to become aviation centric.
The problem is that this extends from HA/DR to low level warfare all the way up the spectrum.
Port seizure.
When we wrap our heads around this basic function of the United States Marine Corps we'll be back on the right path.
