Hey Berger. Summer Fury means nothing to me! Show me that the Missile Marines can fight in Africa and the Middle East!
via USNI News.
Last month, 17 squadrons with San Diego, Calif.-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing joined with 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Logistics Group units for exercise Summer Fury 2020, held over three weeks across Southern California and southwest ranges.Here.
The large-scale exercise had two goals: deploy an integrated MAGTF to conduct expeditionary advance base operations (EABO), and “increase aviation operational proficiency with realistic, relevant training to ensure the Marine Corps’ largest aircraft wing remains operationally excellent, interoperable, deployable on short notice and lethal when called into action,” the Marines said in a statement. This year’s training scenario simulated operations across an expansive island region like the Indo-Pacific.
The 3rd MAW pushed fighter jets, helicopters, Marines and combat equipment hundreds of miles, from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Camp Pendleton north of San Diego to Naval Air Station Lemoore and China Lake Naval Weapons Station farther north in California and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. Aviation ground support Marines set up a series of forward arming and refueling points, or FARPs, to support the aircraft, and heavy-lift helicopters moved artillery guns – all missions that helped project combat forces and stretch the MAGTF’s operational reach.
“From there … you’re penetrating into badness,” the wing commander, Maj. Gen. Christopher Mahoney, said in a recent interview at his MCAS Miramar headquarters. “How are you going to exploit that distance? You exploit with adapting your capabilities and being quick about it. So get in the door when they ain’t looking – and then go. And then ultimately, in our business, you’ve got to destroy something.”
“You exploit, whether it’s distance, whether it’s the electromagnetic spectrum, whether it’s penetrate the geo-political environment,” Mahoney said. “Then you need to destroy – in most cases – and that’s what we do.”
I AM SO UNIMPRESSED! They got a favorite journalist to get out their story? Big Fucking Deal!
You exercised to fight a fight you want and you got the results you wanted. Again. Big Fucking Deal!
We've seen this story several times before. We saw all the services gear up for a nuclear fight that never came. We saw them prepare for a big push by the USSR thru the Fulda Gap. IT NEVER CAME~!
What did come?
Fights and emergencies everywhere else!
Can this "new" Missile Marine Corps fight in the Middle East or Africa? I don't think so. We're seeing hybrid forces that are TEARING APART dispersed units and they're untrained insurgents! They're operating everything from MBTs to IFVs and have anti-air missiles that are taking pot shots at anything in the sky! ADDITIONALLY THEY HAVE BALLISTIC MISSILES THAT THEY'RE RAINING ON SAUDI ARABIA!
I won't even talk about what the Russians will do to this force if it ever decides to deploy against them. The Russians will be like a grizzly bear with a dogs chew toys. They're gonna rip this force apart.
It's theater specific. Enemy specific. Diplomacy dependent. Air Centric. MESS!
Go back to the drawing board. This ain't the Marine Corps. This is an abomination. Unfortunately you're proceeding at pace without any thought and it'll take a reformer to get our house back into order.
The funny thing? I thought Amos was bad. Berger is turning out worse.

The Italians proved that SHOCK has an affect on dismounted infantry! The Missile Marine Corps is making a mistake by believing that well equipped infantry isn't vulnerable!
Facing a regiment of Siberian infantry, the Italians galloped their horses up a narrow gorge to catch the Red Army in the flank. 32 cavalrymen killed, to 150 Soviet dead & 600 prisoners taken as the confused infantry retreated. pic.twitter.com/Gn2IR1iAFl— Live tweets from 1942 (@RealTimeWWII) August 25, 2020
Think about it.
The Italians assaulted Siberian Infantry using an outmoded tactic and with SHOCK, SURPRISE, OVERWHELMING VIOLENCE and overcame that dismounted infantry.
The result?
Surprising to my eyes. A Cav charge against what was then modern infantry? They should have been shot to pieces. But to lose 32 cavalrymen to 150 dead and 600 taken prisoner? ASTONISHING!
My worry?
The Missile Marines are making the same mistake. They might have written off the tank but the tank hasn't been written off everywhere else (the Brits don't count...it's obvious they're piggybacking off the US now so they're thinking coalition warfare).
I can actually see a modern version of this historic event playing out. Massed armored formations that aren't taken out by long range fires (I keep thinking about bad weather like at the Battle of Bulge at the start of that thing) or aviation. They close within distance and its a rout. SHOCK ACTION is being underestimated but its still a part of battle.
We flew a U-2 thru a Chinese no-fly zone????
China’s Defense Ministry: A US U-2 reconnaissance aircraft flew through “a no-fly zone” where the #PLA Northern Theater Command live-fire exercise was occurring. The move is a “serious provocation.” #China #ColdWar #SouthChinaSea @TheWarMonitor @AndrewSErickson @SCS_news pic.twitter.com/kVyUYOmxzi— Intelfeedia (@intelfeedia) August 25, 2020
Wow.
Gutsy. Very gutsy. Wait! What would we do if they did the same? I have no idea.
Maybe not gutsy. Perhaps provocative?
Late Open Comment Post. 25 Aug 2020
The Dept is on standby. This should be interesting. Never done this before but everyone is getting out the high water rescue stuff and the command staff is jumping around like ballerinas. Should be educational (except that people's lives will be affected). Was told to NOT turn the phone off (I feel there is a message in that but I'm not picking up what they're putting down ... pun intended!).
Coronavirus, protests, riots, mayhem in general and now Texas/Louisiana are getting hit by a hurricane? 2020 is turning out to be one FUCKED UP year.

This shit has nothing to do with protesting. This is something else...
1) In a scene that played out several times Monday, a Black Lives Matter protest that began in Columbia Heights confronted White diners outside D.C. restaurants, chanting “White silence is violence!” and demanding White diners show their solidarity. #DCProtests pic.twitter.com/fJbPM76vb0— Fredrick Kunkle WaPo (@KunkleFredrick) August 25, 2020
I don't know who's running these "protests" but what you're seeing aren't protests.
They're something else and they're vile. One of my readers said it best. This is downright evil.
This is the breakdown of society.
What I'm seeing are people that they view as "easy prey" and they're harassing, assaulting and generally being an ass with them. I can't tell you what to do if you find yourself in the situation this lady is facing...or many of the other people (of all colors) that have found themselves facing these pop-up mobs (actually saw a "document" that called them that) but assess the situation and your/family safety is all that counts.
If you see it coming retreat. If you can't then stand your ground. If attacked then fight as if your life depended on it...cause unfortunately it might.
The B-21 is the medium bomber we've all been yelling for...
New B-21 data point: CBO’s chart shows each B-21 can carry eight B61 nuclear bombs, which is half the B61 load-out now on the B-2. https://t.co/xq9N5bBDFl pic.twitter.com/HPVe5GZlJD— Steve Trimble (@TheDEWLine) August 25, 2020
Someone here said it earlier but here it is in print. It will carry have the payload of the B-2 (apparently) which I would say it meets the specs of the medium bomber we've all been yelling for.
Good on the USAF for that.
Now?
Now let's hope that the stealth requirement didn't overload the costs of this puppy and we can get a couple hundred into service.
This is joint capability (if properly exploited) that can help the Navy ACTUALLY solve the problem of the massive Chinese fleet. A hundred B-21's loaded with anti-ship missiles coupled with carrier aviation, subs and the rest of our tactical air fleet (short legged as it is) can at least put them on their back foot.
Even better?
This can put an end to Berger's madness and we can keep the Marine Corps a MEDIUM WEIGHT FORCE that can flex up and down the spectrum of combat and is capable of fighting all over the world (including AFRICA...and the ARCTIC...you're gonna need some type of mechanization up there or you'll freeze to death) not just the Pacific!
The great?
Disciplined foreign policy, a trained populace (or continued tariffs to raise the price of imported goods), a frugal shopper and nationalism with a small "n" means that a chance at diplomacy might yield a bit of fruit.
The Chinese are pragmatic. The Pentagon has been slow to recognize the real threat (don't know why they're so fixated on Russia..don't poke the bear the bear won't fuck with you) but they have now. The fight which I saw coming won't be a walk in the park for the Chinese. In other words we won't get steam rolled. I don't know who would win the fight but it will be a pyrrhic victory so why would either side bother?
If this plane works and the Navy makes some adjustments (along with Army missiles) then the fight can be avoided in this region.

This is redesigned K2 named K2PL Wilk (Wolf), proposed for Poland. It have enlarged turret with improved front and side armor, and also lenghtened hull with improved side and perhaps front armor. pic.twitter.com/sAH8pJdZnm
Personally I like the proposal. Add enough Polish systems and a little bone to the Polish defense industry and I bet they'd bite. Besides it would piss of the Germans and the Poles like pissing off the Germans.
