Future Threat. Flu Pandemic. How do you wargame a global catastrophe?

via CNN
Experts say we are "due" for one. When it happens, they tell us, it will probably have a greater impact on humanity than anything else currently happening in the world.

And yet, like with most people, it is probably something you haven't spent much time thinking about. After all, it is human nature to avoid being consumed by hypotheticals until they are staring us squarely in the face.
Such is the case with a highly lethal flu pandemic. And when it comes, it will affect every human alive today.

Pandemic flu is apolitical and does not discriminate between rich and poor. Geographical boundaries are meaningless, and it can circle the globe within hours. In terms of potential impact on mankind, the only thing that comes close is climate change. And, like climate change, pandemic flu is so vast, it can be challenging to wrap your head around it.
Story here.

Interesting.  I've read about the Spanish Flu.  We've all heard the scares with the Avian Flu in China but a modern day pandemic?

How do you wargame that?  How do you wargame a global catastrophe not based on arms but a virus?

With globalization as it is, we'll see every major nation affected.  Thinking a bit more about this thing it could even alter the course of nations and realign military power.

China due to its density could be all but destroyed.  Same for portions of the US (thinking the Northeast corridor, California, major parts of Florida and probably every major city in between).  Europe would be dog snot.  The bureaucracy would be too slow to react (much slower than even the US and because of the setup individual countries would be waiting for a signal from Brussels).  Major parts of Russia would be trashed...only the frontier regions would probably survive.

Yeah.

A flu pandemic would probably wreck the civilized world.  Although I can see some faring better than others.  Japan, S. Korea, Singapore would all be hit hard but survive.  Having seen them don medical grade masks during past outbreaks I think they're more alert to the dangers.  Australia?  Living on the ass end of the world has its benefits.  Who might rise to new heights?  Maybe Brazil.  They're far enough away, are advanced enough and have internal security forces already established to weather the storm.  They might be the big winners when the world gets back on its feet after the next pandemic.

Navy SEAL illegal drug use said to be "staggering"

Thanks to Iron V for the link!

via CBS News.
“People that we know of, that we hear about have tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, ecstasy,” said a SEAL. “That’s a problem.”
How prevalent is drug abuse in the SEAL teams?
“It’s growing,” said one SEAL. “The drug use, it’s growing.”
Last December, as an e-mail shows, the SEALs halted all training and ordered a safety stand-down because of the drug problem.
“I feel like I’m watching our foundation, our culture erode in front of our eyes,” said Capt. Jamie Sands, the commander of 900 SEALs based on the East Coast.
Sands had been on the job for just three months and already five SEALs had been kicked off the teams for using drugs.
“I feel betrayed,” Sands said. “How do you do that to us? How do you decide that it’s OK for you to do drugs?”
Every SEAL under his command was required to attend this meeting or else watch it online. In response to our request, the Navy released an edited version of the video.

SecDef Mattis chilled me out with his press conference!

You know I'm not the fan of Mattis that many of my readers are.  Quite honestly his name has been associated with a couple of incidents that make me ask aloud WTF and his statements on foreign policy have me thinking he's an undercover Neo-Con.

I won't even go into his support (never heard him state it in a talk but others have said that he does) of some of the more goofy concepts that the Marine Corps is pushing (I have yet to hear a proper defense of the Expeditionary Rifle Squad concept....seems like everyone is just swallowing it whole without thinking).

Having said all that he chilled me out with his press conference.

1.  He said that the bombing of the Syrian Air Base was a separate incident and was focused on the use of chemical weapons.

2.  He stated that the main objective is destroying ISIS.

3.  He seemed to indicate that areas of cooperation with even Assad/Russia/Iran was still possible in the fight against ISIS.

Its not much but I'm thrilled.

I thought this administration had gone completely off mission and had fully embraced the nation building insanity that the Obama/Dem/Neo-Con zealots were pushing.

Am I completely happy?

Fuck no!  Reports have come out that Ivanka Trump influenced his decision.  Are you shitting me?  By right of birth a person gets to influence foreign policy?  I have a thicker resume on the subject than she does and yet she's a shot caller?  Don't get it wrong I don't have anything against her but I mean seriously?

I remain CAUTIOUSLY hopeful but the dude really needs to stop all the CRAZY ASS tweets!  Shit talking when it comes to the little fat man and thinking that you can publicly humiliate China into action on the N. Korea issue is beyond amatuer hour.  I'm just a blogger and even I know better than that.  Where the fuck is McMasters?  Someone needs to have a serious sit down and tell dude to knock that shit off.

Anyway.  Rant is over.  Have a good day.

Taiphun-U pics.

Thanks to s300v4 for the pics!

Ok my Russian readers are gonna have to educate me.  Why so many different armored vehicle types?  What is the thinking here?  I mean we're actually seeing more dedicated APCs of all types than you can shake a stick at.  Even more puzzling? They're all going to frontline units and I don't see a clear distinction between vehicles used for internal security and those for pure battlefield use.

Take the Taiphun for example.  Who is it going to and for what purpose (nice looking rig though!)?

Mike Yeo @ The Base Leg comes thru again!

I did an earlier post talking about the Australian future anti-air missile system.  Well little did I know but Mike is all over it.

I SAY AGAIN!  IF YOU'RE NOT FOLLOWING THIS GUY YOU'RE MISSING OUT!

The speculation about the Bushmaster being used is obviously wrong...its gonna be the Hawkei and apparently the Australians are moving on this project poste haste.

Well done Mike!  Thanks Bro!

BMMP. Is this real?

Thanks to DWI for the link!

This thing keeps landing in my inbox and to be honest I don't know if this is a real concept or not.  One of the many articles that has been given me is here. Turn on your Google Translate because its in Russian but I'm a bit intrigued.

At a glance its a 8x8 wheeled IFV packing the usual massive Russian firepower, but what has me wondering is that (if my translate is correct) they're expecting some pretty impressive water speeds!  How?  I'm not even close to being a hydrodynamic engineer but could side skirts really make that big a difference?

The overall shape is reminiscent of the EFV so maybe they've cracked the code. Time will tell.

CEFAR Radar System

Thanks to Jason for the link!

The Australians have launched a competition for their next gen anti-air system and the CEFAR is a current favorite.

What has me jazzed?  They're taking an Active Phased Array Radar, originally designed for warships and are scaling it down for use by land forces!

I'll leave it to the geeks in my audience to educate me about its capabilities against stealth aircraft but if I recall correctly it operates in a band that IS able to successfully track stealth aircraft.

What are the implications?  I really don't know.  This is an Australian effort that appears to have gained quite a bit of interest in the Pentagon so we'll see what we'll see in the near future.

Side Note.  Jason tells me that the Bushmaster will probably be the carrier for the NASAMS missile (I don't see them getting the radar small enough for that vehicle...MAN trucks would have to be the carrier) which will be the weapon used...which is also awesome...they're getting some impressive bang for the buck considering how that weapon system is continuing to evolve.  Overall I like the concept!

Gerasimov evolution of the levels of war. LEARN THIS...the US Army is!

Thanks to Dimitris for the link!

The US Army has done a detailed study of the Battle of Debal’tseve (the Infantry house at Ft. Benning is to be applauded) and its a must read.

I've heard all the latest buzz about Hybrid Warfare but didn't get a real understanding of the implications of it till I read this article on the battle.

Read it here, but my takeaway is grim.

We're not ready.

Public Service Announcement. Don't want your ass kicked by police then follow instructions!

Many will be surprised (Tony wouldn't) but I am an impartial observer of police action in the US.  Many times I have been on opposite sides of the fence with many of my readers.

This latest incident from a passenger getting kicked off a flight though deserves a special comment.

If you don't want your ass kicked by police then follow instructions!

Notice I didn't say that the police were right or wrong.  Notice that I haven't given an opinion of the actual incident.  All I'm saying is whether you think you're as right as rain, during your encounter with police you follow fucking instructions.

If their actions are particularly egregious (or you feel wronged) then you take that up at a later time in the proper venue, but in the "streets" you follow instructions!

That is all.

The USMC so needs this system!  Imagine the Ground Combat Element -Maneuver composed of an ACV, ACV-120 mm Gun, ACV Anti-Tank, ACV-120 Mortar, ACV Anti-Air, ACV Command & Control, ACV Medivac, ACV Engineer and ACV Recovery Vehicle!

Total mobility, more than imposing firepower...necked down into a family of vehicles that could punch above its weight until heavier forces arrived to relieve them!

Leopard 1 Tank Destroyer Concept...

China is massing 150,000 troops on the border of N. Korea!

Thanks to FNU for the link!

via ZeroHedge.

While the catalyst is unclear, it appears the market dropped as headlines of further sanctions against Russia appeared and reports of China deploiying 150,000 troops to its North Korea border.

According to Korean news agency Chosun, the "Chinese army has deployed about 150,000 troops to the North Korean border in two groups to prepare for unforeseen circumstances." The reason: the prospect of "military options", such as preemptive attacks on North Korea, like the one the United States launched on Syria.

More Google translated:
As the United States announced its independent North Korean behavior and moved the United States Navy's nuclear-powered Calvinus (CVN-70) carrier class to Singapore, the Chinese army has deployed about 150,000 troops in two groups to prepare for unforeseen circumstances.

"The report said. It is because of the prospect of taking "military options", such as preemptive attacks on North Korea, just as the United States has launched an air raid on Syria.

Japan's Sankei Shimbun reported on the 9th that the Syrian missile strike in the United States shocked China, suggesting that the People's Liberation Army forces are moving toward the Yalu River, .

The newspaper said the video was also broadcast on the Internet, but the authorities removed the relevant information, saying the move was a medical and aft support unit for the Shenyang bulb (the northern light bulb)
Another possible catalyst is a report by Russia's interfax that Moscow is preparing for more sanctions, and has warned local air companies about a possible suspension of charter flights with Tu

POSSIBLE INTRODUCTION OF SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIAN MILITARY OVER SYRIA NOT TO AFFECT RUSSIA'S ACTIONS IN SYRIA, OPERATION TO FIGHT TERRORISTS TO CONTINUE - OZEROV
RUSSIAN AIR COMPANIES RECEIVE WARNING ABOUT POSSIBLE SUSPENSION OF CHARTER FLIGHTS WITH TURKEY - SOURCE
Whatever the catalyst, the reaction is clear:
I don't know.  Is this just another snap exercise by the Red Chinese?  Is it in response to our sending an aircraft carrier to the region?  Could they believe that we are about to launch a decapitation strike against the little fat man?

Only God knows and he ain't telling me nothing.

Terrorism Rant. Why I don't talk about attacks in Europe anymore...

Small rant.

If you've been a long time reader of this blog then you know that I covered terrorist attacks in Europe hardcore.  I didn't in the latest attack Sweden.  Do you wonder why?

Why should I care if the Europeans don't?

Its really very simple.  I have many readers from Europe that support the policies of the EU and when I've tried to debate them I've been shouted down. After terrorist attacks instead of being alarmed at the threat inside their countries they've countered with the talking points of how "effective their security forces reacted".

They've made a deal with the devil and he's coming to get his due.  They don't care, I don't care.  I wish them well but its obvious that the threat is now enduring.  They will suffer this fate for at least another generation....I hope they survive but I wonder....

Navy Matters Blog has a must read on the Tomahawk strike.

Read Navy Matters Blog write up on the Tomahawk strike here.

When did the Surface Navy in the form of Burke Class Destroyers become the go to entity for punitive strikes for the White House/Pentagon?

Riddle me this.

When was the last time that we saw airstrikes being conducted for the purpose of "sending a message"?  I'm not sure but I think it goes back to the early 90's if not before.

No one asks where are the carriers....now they ask where are the Burke's!

With little notice the US Navy's surface fleet has become the instrument of "sending a message".
