Trouble with the ACV...

via USNI
The Marine Corps ordered an immediate stop to any waterborne operation of its fleet of amphibious combat vehicles until it resolves an issue with a troubled towing mechanism, the service announced Friday afternoon.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Marine Corps has suspended waterborne operations of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) after identifying an issue with the towing mechanism. The Marine Corps is working on identifying and fixing the root cause of the problem,” Maj. Jim Stenger, a spokesman at Marine Corps headquarters, said in a statement. “Realistic training is a vital component of readiness, and the Marine Corps is committed to ensuring Marines train under the safest conditions possible; this includes ensuring the functionality of vehicles and equipment.”

101st conducts air assault training...side note...is it time to convert them to being pure light fighters instead of air assault?

Note. The 18th Airborne Corps definitely has a pecking order. 82nd, then 10th Mtn and finally the 101st. The main problem for the 101st? Helicopters just aren't strategically mobile.

I wonder if the Army shouldn't do one of two things. Either dump the Air Assault label attached them (well that's a DEFINITE thing they need to do regardless) and (1) convert them fully to an airborne unit or (2) convert them fully to being light fighters. Air Assault is so widespread in the Army now that's its hardly unique....devoting an entire division to a task that is "common" seems a waste.

Personally I lean toward making them light fighters but I don't think it'll happen.
