Piranha 5 with Lance turret. Marine Personnel Carrier Contender?

CCV

General Dynamics is/was entering the Piranha 5 with Lance turret for the Canadian Close Combat Vehicle contest.  Does this give us an indication on how they will proceed with the Marine Personnel Carrier program?

I would guess it does.  It might mean that they're moving forward and standardizing on the Piranha 5...obviously for the MPC they'll have to make sure it swims but I just don't see the design house really pushing hard on that effort.  More than likely they'll push its mine resistant features, modularity and the fact that its already in service worldwide (at least in the model III form).

If its a cost shoot out then they might have a chance.  A small chance but a chance none-the-less.

  1. Sol, do you think part of the pitch could be that this hull itself is in use by the USMC and the Army? its the basis of the LAV III's and the strykers, this one is different of course but alot in common, seems like a good idea if your looking for supply chain, spare parts, maintenance, etc, but i dont know how much commonality there is but just a thought.

  2. Piranha V is a further development of the Piranha line but is a much larger and heavier vehicle than the Piranha III that the Stryker is based on. Engine, wheels etc. are all different.

Given the other competitors for the USMC, and the way trends are going in 8x8 vehicles, the Piranha III is too small so the V makes a lot more sense for GDLS.

The Piranha V did beat the Boxer and VBCI in the UK FRES competition a couple years back, which seems like a solid recommendation even though the Brits bungled the actual procurement part of the program.

  3. well i know their different but the basic frame is probability similar and just working with the same company and the same supply chain should help a bit, also the frame is proven effective, the line of vehicles are proven battlefield assets.
