Thanks to Bryan for the link!

MOSCOW, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Russia will next month hold its biggest war games in nearly four decades, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was quoted as saying on Tuesday by Russian news agencies.

The exercise, called Vostok-2018 (East-2018), will take place in central and eastern Russian military districts and involve almost 300,000 troops, over 1,000 military aircraft, two of Russia's naval fleets, and all its airborne units, agencies quoted Shoigu as saying.

It will be the biggest military exercise since 1981, Shoigu was cited as saying. (Reporting by Katya Golubkova Editing by Andrew Osborn)
Ok.

This is a really really really big exercise.

But is it alarming?

No.  Not really.  Not if you're being mature and not simply reactionary.  Not if you're thinking like an adult and you're aware of the games that nations play.

WTF am I talking about?

The US and NATO have been running exercise after exercise on the border with Russia.  We've assembled various battlegroups all with the idea of "preventing Russian aggression".

Has anyone here (besides me) considered how all this must look from the Russian side?

If I was a Russian national I would probably be pounding the table saying that NATO can't be trusted and we need to mobilize our forces for the inevitable fight.

So at the end of the day I believe this is simply a response to what they've seen for the past year and a half.  We've run exercise after exercise and their response is to run one big ass exercise.

The only thing that's shocking is the waste of it all.  Europe is the last place on this planet that anyone needs to be gearing up for a fight.
