Expert Action Badge? The Army is giving a badge for knowing basic skills? What is this madness!

via Army Times.
You’ve heard of the Expert Infantryman Badge and Expert Field Medical Badge, as well as the Combat Infantryman Badge and its cousin, the Combat Action Badge.

Now, the Army is toying with the idea of another expert badge, specifically for everyone who isn’t an infantryman or a combat medic.

The Expert Action Badge would test general soldier skills, Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey told Army Times, similar to how the EIB and EFMB test core infantry and combat medic proficiency outside of deployments.

"I want to build individual skills," Dailey said. "The reason why we have an EIB and EFMB is so those two fields can maintain their skills during peacetime."

Offering testing and a badge is a good way to incentivize soldiers and units to train and remain proficient, Dailey said.

Command Sgt. Maj. David Davenport, the top enlisted soldier at Training and Doctrine Command, went public with the plan on March 24. Initial reactions from soldiers and veterans were mixed, and Army Times was flooded with nearly 500 reader comments about the move.

Some were interested in the opportunity to test their skills in garrison, while others saw it as another participation badge — similar to the way they felt about the CAB — for soldiers who opted out of the risks of the infantry.

This came out last year.  I totally missed it.  Why am I zooming back to it now?  Because I saw this on my twitter feed...
Tell me I'm wrong but this seems like madness!  You're gonna give a badge for knowing basic skills?

What's going on Army Dawgs!!!

The Iranians copied our spy drone that crashed years ago!

Thanks to Dima for the link!

Dima made the off the cuff statement and I'm running full speed with it.  This DOES INDEED look like the RQ-170 that crashed in an Iranian desert years ago.

They copied it and now they're flying it over Israel.  Simply amazing.  Why didn't the Pentagon launch cruise missiles to destroy it?

Info on this weird little monster is here.

Benjamin Ong's pics from the Singapore Air Show!

Note:  Benjamin took the following pics at the Singapore Air Show and was kind enough to share them.  I'm only popping out the armor pics but he has tons of aviation too.  I'll send an e-mail (hopefully I can find it) to see if he has a Flickr or similar page to link to.  Do not use without his permission!

I believe this is the first detailed view of the rear of this vehicle.

YPG is getting PERFECT flanking shots on Turk tanks!

JESUS!  This is like how they teach it at the schoolhouse!  A perfect flanking shot on a tank?  That's NOT suppose to happen in real life!  You're suppose to have to work your ass off for that kind of shot!

I'm talking about crawling thru scrub brush, hiking hills, giving the bugs that crawl by you names cause you're on your belly long enough for them to make the return trip....

I've been watching the vids and getting descriptions of the fighting but I really need to get on Google maps and look at the terrain and disposition of forces.

These Turk soldiers, no matter how we feel about their leadership, are literally fighting for their lives.  Either they're being put into TERRIBLE positions or their training was piss poor.

I really want the answer to that question.

40 S&W a useless round that should go away?

via AllOutdoors.com
Dear 40 S&W, it is time for you to retire.  I hate to break the news to you, but you were a mistake.  No child wants to hear they were a mistake.  However, since your core is lead and you are dense anyway, I am going to tell you about your family history.

Your parents, (the FBI) were thinking about adopting a child.  The 10mm, 41 Action Express, 9mm and the 45 acp were up for adoption.  Your parents, being the spoiled brats they are, decided going with something already on the market was not good enough for them.   The FBI felt they needed to split hairs.  They wanted something larger than the 9mm, but more capacity than the 45 acp.

The FBI contacted Smith & Wesson and asked them to develop a new handgun cartridge.  This new cartridge was you, the 40 S&W.

Right from the very start there were complaints about recoil.  When someone said they did not like your recoil, that person was usually criticized.  Comments were along the lines of, “You must be a sissy if you do not like the 40.”
Story here.

I totally agree with this article but I have to add that I don't necessarily blame the FBI for trying to go this route.

They were coming off the Miami shooting (I think it was Miami) where a guy was hit several times and didn't go down, along with a pretty ugly aftermath of the drug wars, and the craziness in Waco either coming or having just passed too.

The idea of trying to get the stopping power of the 45 with the capacity of the 9mm mad sense.

It just didn't work out.

So yeah, the 40 S&W should go away.

Did a Pantsir knock down the Israeli F-16?

Thanks to Drinas for the link!

First.

The Israelis worked with Russia to take a beat and keep this situation from getting out of hand.

Good.

I don't think people truly understand how rapidly these things can spiral out of control.  Fangs come out, people get hurt and then fangs get buried into the floorboard and you're not stopping till you're covered in blood either dishing out or get a shitload of pain.

Next.

I don't know what the author was trying to say here.  Did he mean Shaheen anti-air system?

Regardless, scuttlebutt is that the Pantsir-S1 did the job.

This is disturbing.

I thought this was already in the threat catalog.  I thought this was already accounted for and solved.

Definitely need more details on the shoot down.  If they got lucky then fine.  Shit happens.  If the Israelis got played then there is cause for alarm.

YPG shoots down Turk T129 Attack Helicopter

Thanks to Giannis for the link!

Wow.  Giannis found a good one.  Follow this guy on Twitter cause it seems like the Turks are making a big push in the area!

Another Israeli warplane shot down?

Thanks to Vodkar for the link!

Quick recap for those that just stepped into the SNAFU! classroom.  The Israelis launched an airstrike, one of their planes was hit, the pilot recovered...the Israelis get mad, launch even more strikes and now another plane might have been hit.

CENTCOM needs to deconflict this shit, get everyone at the table and STOP striking Syrian forces asap!

Note:  My stance remains the same.  Syria is secondary at best,    to not even being on my list of concerns if we're being actual and factual.  Notice that the attacks stopped in Europe once Trump told the military to focus on defeating them poste haste?  That's my point.  Focus on ISIS and defeat that enemy.  A negotiated settlement can be reached on the future of Syria!
