How the Marine Corps Failed Squadron 242...MUST WATCH - HEART BREAKING VIDEO!
We could have, should have saved this Marine. This squadron was setup to fail. The Squadron CO was fired to help cover that failure.
Unacceptable.
We need accountability, not low level scapegoats (never in my life thought I would consider a Battalion CO equivalent to be low level).

Much bloviating about the killing of the Senior Quds Force Commander. Should have been done long ago...
“I have a lot of concerns about a President who has already shown to have no strategy for the larger challenges we have in the Middle East,” says Sen. Cory Booker on the Pentagon’s announcement that President Trump ordered a strike that killed a senior Iranian military official. pic.twitter.com/szoGLeRuvS— CNN (@CNN) January 3, 2020
The wringing of hands, bloviating and almost crying over the death of the Senior Quds Force Commander leaves me cold.
We should have killed the bastard long ago.
My wish for him and his family? I hope they dwell in agonizing hellfire for an eternity.
As far as the people acting all "scared and shit"? Get over it. They're gonna do what they're gonna do. We deal with it when it comes, we do our best to stop it and if they do get thru then we pound them like a piece of cold meat.
Trump got this right.
Kill them, protect assets and pick our fights.
Sending in the Marines and the 82nd to protect our embassy was the right move. They initiated that action and we counter reacted to make sure it wasn't a repeat of that Clinton mess or worse a rerun of our exit from Saigon.
An Amphibious Ready Group and the 82nd Ready Brigade are both steaming/spooling up for action.
We got this shit.
If the Iranians come then we let the Lions off the leash and maul the bastards. Do we want war? Do we want our people in harms way? Hell no. But its about time we stop turning tail when we're threatened.
What about the ongoing wars? I still want us out. But I characterize this as being a different issue.
Rant over. Rambling post over. The news media has me a bit amped up on this one.
Last but not least.
That damn Hellfire missile with ninja blades strikes again. That is obviously the weapon of choice now.

Rumor Control. Is Egypt about to block Turkey's entry into the Libyan Civil War?
#BREAKING: Naval Forces of #Egypt & #Greece will hold joint military exercise close to the #Libya's territorial waters. As its result airspace and international waters which are useful for #Turkey to send troops to #Libya will be blocked on #Turkish Navy & Air Force! pic.twitter.com/DAlEZl66tQ— Babak Taghvaee (@BabakTaghvaee) January 2, 2020
I don't recall anyone paying much attention to the Egyptian reaction (or possible reaction) to Turkey's intention to enter the Libyan Civil War (their Parliament approved the action earlier today).
Could they actually cross swords?

Ok. This one don't sound quite right...
BREAKING: Taiwan’s chief of General Staff missing after helicopter makes emergency landing, rescue effort underwayhttps://t.co/qRZlcxfZfY pic.twitter.com/Jw9hVcYO2v— RT (@RT_com) January 2, 2020
The Chief of the Taiwan General Staff is missing? Seriously? Sounds off as f*ck but I'll wait for more news.
13 people, including 3 senior officers, a journalist, and crew members were on board the ill-fated helicopter. 10 people have been found alive, but the 3 senior officers are still missing. https://t.co/4vel8NeAmJ— Global Times (@globaltimesnews) January 2, 2020
Even more curious. Can't wait to hear the details on this....
Units involved in the Embassy Reinforcement Mission in Iraq...
🇺🇸 Troop movements following the 🇮🇶 #BaghdadEmbassyAttack so far:— CurrentOps.com (@currentopscom) January 1, 2020
ARMY:
2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Inf Rgt, 1st BCT, 82nd Abn Div (Immediate Response Force)
USAF:
Air Commandos from (tentative) 7, 16 & 67 Special Ops Sqdn + numerous C-17s & tankers
USMC: @spmagtf_cr_cc
I think I pretty much nailed this yesterday (before the news came out). What's left a mystery is Special Ops commitment to the operation. I know they're on the ground somewhere and I'm leaning toward it probably being US Army Special Forces. Additionally I'm betting its bigger than an A-Team and probably Platoon sized (not at all sure how they operate...or if they even deploy Platoon sized elements but old skool small teams no longer work for anyone...not Snipers and not Special Ops).

Sorry to hit you with great power competition on the New Year but do you see that?
If we're looking at a total war concept where all the levers of economic, military, diplomatic and WILL OF THE PEOPLE is required to be harnessed to win the next war (along with a robust domestic infrastructure) then how do we measure up against the Chinese?
I respect the advances they've made. I don't think I'm building them up into 10 feet tall monsters but rather looking honestly at what they're doing and comparing it to what we have/are doing.
The comparison from my chair isn't good.

Images from the US Embassy in Baghdad depict MV-22 Ospreys delivering U.S. Marines to the US Embassy in Baghdad to reinforce security

I wonder what the backroom fight to see who got to reinforce the embassy looked like. I can imagine FAST Regiment, Rangers, Special Forces CIF (although they might actually be there...SF and the Marine Corps seem to be operating quite well together with almost no friction), and without a doubt portions of the 82nd.
Of course its all probably moot anyway.
Instead of pulling out I'm hearing word that up to 4000 US troops could be deployed to the region in the coming days. Quickest units to get there (as a cohesive unit and not a joint op) would be to simply draw them from the 82nd and fly them to Kuwait to act as a "Regional" Quick Reaction Force.
I don't think we have an MEU operating in the area at this time and I don't think a Stryker Brigade can get there in time. The 25th ID is too far away. The 10th Mtn seems to have dropped off the map and the 101st is light only in name cause it will take a tremendous effort to get their rides into the region.
Everything else in the Army is Stryker Brigades or Armored Brigade Combat Teams. I know its a total force kinda world but I'm not familiar with Army National Guard units or their readiness for this type of real world operation.
I imagine if in a pinch the Marines could send 2/7, 3/5 or other Battalions but I don't know their current rotations so I'm at a loss there.
The Navy is probably sending a few Burkes over and the Air Force is certainly gonna get called to provide air power. An Air Expeditionary Force?
Regardless it looks like we're staying and playing and unlike the Brits we won't simply evacuate till this blows over (would the optics of our embassy being ransacked be that bad?).
The Middle East is a tar pit and we're up to our neck in it.
Most depressing tweet about the "siege" of our embassy in Iraq...
Well. Hope it's not their Dien Bien Phu https://t.co/WUVEZNTSeD— Aki Heikkinen (@akihheikkinen) December 31, 2019
Have you noticed all the characterizations of our "wars" in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan to the Vietnam War?
Why the linkage?
Because they're so damn similar it seems.
* A foe that fails to realize that we have superior firepower and continues to fight.
* Attempts at Vietnamization back then and Afghanistanization now. After more than a decade of war we're still at step one of building both their military and govt structures.
* Tremendous cost in lives and fortune to prop up weak govts.
And finally the sad reality that has yet to dawn on the President, Congress or the American people that the military cannot provide the type of victory that we're all looking for.
Military leadership stupidly sought victory without fully committing to the effort and they've made the rookie mistake of believing that continuing military operations equaled successful execution of the war.
Do I think this is our Dien Bien Phu?
NO!
But I do think it's another metric of how badly we've fought this thing. I've called it before and I'll call it again.
Either by design or accident we're now participants in a regional war in the Middle East. Either by design or accident we will not achieve victory (and I don't think anyone can define that word anymore in relation to these wars) but will inevitably tire and withdraw.
Hopefully its on our own terms but that issue MUST be faced.
