Trying to find out if this is just an artillery battalion (or smaller) and the infantry battalion (or smaller) providing security. Either way it's apparent that after Dunford met with his Russian and Turkish counterparts that destroying ISIS is NOW the number one goal of the United States.
About fucking time!
This is how you end the refugee crisis. This is how you arrange for the headchoppers to get their 72 goats!

Discussion. How effective is the Russian anti-air complex of the Pantsir S1-3 and S300v4?
Above you see infographics on the Pantsir S1-3 and S300v4 anti-air gun/missile systems.
Earlier today I got into a pissing match with a reader over a story regarding Israeli F-35's already having been in combat striking a warehouse in Syria. The source of the story went on to say that the reason for the strike was to keep Hezbollah from obtaining Pantsir anti-air missile systems that he said would deny the Israeli Air Force access to Lebanon.
I took the story of Israeli F-35's being used in combat with a grain of salt. Quite honestly I rate it as propaganda for the program. What made me sit up and take notice was the claim that the Pantsir could give the terrorist a ready made anti-access aerial denial weapon.
If that system is that good then it would be a huge development for the region. We're already seeing terrorist groups challenge nation state armies on the ground, but if they could do it in the air then that would be an alarming new "thing" that could change things in the ME in the near term.
Which brings me back to this.
How effective are these systems? I want opinions. Is the Frenchie right? Could the Pantsir deny the Israeli Air Force entry into Lebanon? Could the teaming of the Pantsir and S300v4 effectively nullify US efforts (if it came to that) of destroying Iranian nuclear weapon sites?
What do you think.
First to Fight | Marines land in Vietnam (vid) & Modest Proposal for a name change.
In today's military the "expeditionary" is applied to every damn thing. It's been co-opted by every branch to such a point that even the USAF calls its air wing's "expeditionary".
The term has lost its flavor and is no longer distinctive.
I propose a name change that is in keeping with our history and yet will once again set USMC units apart from others.
Dump "expeditionary" and go to the Vietnam standard "amphibious"!
What do I mean? During the Vietnam War the USMC changed the name of its MEU's to MAU...Marine Amphibious Units. The name change was to prevent form offending the locals that had a bad experience with French expeditionary units (if I'm remembering my history....correct me if I'm wrong, I'm tossing this up on the fly).
So in essence we went from MEU, MEB, MEF to MAU, MAB and MAF. Marine Amphibious Units instead of Marine Expeditionary Units might seem contrary to Marine Corps history but we've used it before and it would be in keeping with the idea of the Corps returning to the sea.
Either way its just an idea and if it costs too much to change the letterhead then it should be rejected on those grounds alone.
Forget whether or not the F-35 has seen combat...the real story is the Pantsir!

Georges Malbrunot, who writes for French newspaper Le Figaro, cited French intelligence sources. He posted on Twitter today that examples of the Israeli F-35 – two of which have been delivered to the country to date – took part in a raid over Syrian territory on the night of January 12-13. The mission saw them strike objectives around the capital, Damascus.Forget the talk about the F-35. The US software is a mess and if the Israeli's have worked out their own code that works like a champ it still doesn't matter (unless they sell it to Lockheed Martin) because the US won't allow them to sell it to other F-35 users.
According to Malbrunot, the F-35s targeted warehouses containing Russian-made Pantsir-S1 mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems that Israel feared could be delivered from Syria to Hezbollah forces operating in Lebanon. The warehouse was located at Mezzeh, a military airfield in Damascus.
During the same attack, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) also reportedly destroyed an S-300 SAM battery deployed near the Syrian presidential palace, on Mount Qassioun. According to the same unnamed French intelligence source quoted by Malbrunot, the F-35 aircraft finally overflew the palace of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, before returning to Israel.
Malbrunot provided a final quote from an unnamed soldier, explaining that: ‘With the Pantsir, Hezbollah ensures that the Israeli Air Force is almost totally unable to operate over Lebanon.’
Providing the account is true, it seems unlikely that Israel would admit the use of F-35s at this stage. However, in the past the IAF has been quick to put new assets into combat if required for specific missions – and the continued effort to prevent advanced weapons landing in Hezbollah hands may fit that remit.
If they used US code then they used it to fly straight and level and drop a couple of bombs on fixed sites. I'm not so sure I buy that they used the plane. It's an interesting story but everyone is missing the REAL news here. Check out the quote from the unnamed soldier...
‘With the Pantsir, Hezbollah ensures that the Israeli Air Force is almost totally unable to operate over Lebanon.’That's a crazy powerful statement.
If we are to believe the F-35 part of the story (and I don't) then what should have everyone going nuts is the last part!
A French official is stating that a Russian anti-air system can in essence nullify the mighty Israeli Air Force...in essence provide a terror group with an anti-access/area denial ability?
Is the Pantsir that good? I don't know but I need to find out!

You've never seen this many US flags flying in combat!
Thanks to Filippo for the pic!
Ok. This is more than a "deconfliction" effort. This has to be part of a psyops campaign. HAVE YOU EVER seen this many US flags flying on vehicles in combat? Answer. NEVER!
This is damn curious. I'd sure love to know instead of speculate on what's behind this

Russia details Bumerang 8x8 progress via IHS Janes.
via IHS Janes
Russia has released additional details of its latest Bumerang (Boomerang) family of wheeled 8x8 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) that are the long-term replacement for the currently deployed BTR-80 8x8 amphibious armoured personnel carrier (APC).
The Bumerang chassis has the designation VPK-7829, with the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) variant designated the K-17 and the APC model is designated the K-16 (while under development the vehicle was referred to as the Gilza, which is Russian for 'cartridge').
Trials with the first batch of six vehicles are still under way and an initial production order is expected soon to be placed with the Military Industrial Corporation (MIC), which is the prime contractor, sources at the recent International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi told Jane's .
New Turkish AAV?
Story and pic via Defense Blog.
Story here.
Not gonna step on his toes. Follow the link to read it on his blog. One thing though. He speculates that this vehicle will be based on the Kaplan, a new IFV being developed for the Turkish armed forces. I wonder though. Interesting nonetheless. The Turks are determined to build a world class defense sector and despite all the domestic issues they seem well on their way. Now if only they could get better than mixed performance from their gear in combat!

Blast from the past....LeClerc Anti-Air System..

Hmm. Never knew this was a thing. Curious though. I just realized a couple of our allies like the Japanese, Germans and S. Koreans make pretty capable anti-air guns that should be easily fitted on a US chassis (M1 Abrams, Bradley, Stryker, AMPV and even the ACV). Not invented here but if we could get the rights to build it here then the Army/Marine Corps really has no excuse for not getting this done.
On a side note the French are worth watching. When they make the pivot to prepping for a Russian invasion then I will take that as being a sign that the threat is credible. Meanwhile they're still tailoring their military to "out of area" operations.

Penetrating Air Tanker? Offensive warfare concepts warping our requirements?
Thanks to Filippo for the link!
via Defense News.
As enemy air defenses improve, the Air Force may need a penetrating aerial refueling tanker that can move forward in conjunction with stealthy fifth-generation aircraft like the F-22 and F-35, Air Mobility Command head Gen. Carlton Everhart told reporters Tuesday. This is crazy on a plate! Is the idea of offensive warfare warping our procurement across the board? Are we biasing all of our requirements to operating in the enemy's back yard?
A study, slated to begin this year, will help the service decide the path forward, but Everhart said officials likely will skip past a KC-Y competition, either folding in modifications to the KC-46A or directly transitioning to the KC-Z.
“Once that study is done, then we’ll start programming, and we’re looking around the 2030 to 2035 area in the budget where it gains us the opportunity to be able to procure a new follow-on tanker,” he said during a round-table discussion at the Air Force Association conference.
In my mind that adds an additional layer of complexity that actually makes no sense.
Consider this.
The Neo-Cons in the US always talk about supporting our allies. Its used as the rationale behind stationing troops all over the globe. Its the reason why we spend 10 times more on defense than our allies and potential enemies.
We defend those that should defend themselves.
But putting that to the side for a minute. Do you get the disconnect? If we're defending allies then we're building the wrong kind of air force. We should be placing a premium on defensive fighters, anti-air systems etc. Our Army should totally embrace tanks that can fight hull down and defeat the attacking enemy.
Instead, everywhere we look we're seeing our services biased toward offensive action. Maybe I'm biased but the Navy patrols the commerce lanes and the Marine Corps has traditionally acted as an intervention force so they can be excused from this diatribe but the Air Force is going hog wild on offensive operations. WHY?
Pic of Indonesia Medium Tank Hull...is this the future of USMC armor?
Thanks to Dwi for the link!
That's a bare bones look at the future Indonesian Medium Tank's hull but I think the bigger issue is the future of USMC armor. I know! We've been over this ground before but I'm at a loss. I'd really like to know where leadership is with the issue.
One possible future? We toss away Main Battle Tanks and instead form "Amphibious Assault Battalions" in a new way. Under one enlarged roof we have Tanks in ACV 120mm Gun Versions, Carriers, Engineer, Medevac, Command/Control etc...and the other future? We stay the course. A third option? We develop a Medium Battle Tank, dump the heavy Abrams and make the tankers expeditionary by making them lighter.
My issue? We've got to get tanks off the sidelines in our planning. We've got to get them aboard ship in a big way, involved in even minor exercises and plotting their future. Ideally we'd get the Ground Community to get off its ass, stop being stunted by these silly social experiments and focused 100 percent on how we're gonna set ourselves up to fight in the future.
We'll see what happens.

Blast from the past...Millenworks JLTV candidate!
How many remember the Millenworks JLTV candidate? This was my personal favorite and it would have NICELY bridged the gap (in my opinion) between the protection of the JLTV and the original "go anywhere" ability of the Humvee.
The iron triangle is a beast and its my view that we've tilted it too far toward protection and ignored mobility. The Millenworks JLTV was fast, carried a metric butt ton of gear and was a bit smaller than its competitors so would have been better on the strategic mobility scale.
Too bad the selection committee didn't see (as if anyone could) the battlefield of the future. If they could then we'd probably see Millenworks JLTV in motor pools in the Army and Marine Corps.
So you're still outraged by the latest Marine "scandal"??? Take a look at it's source.
I've been beyond amused, a little pissed and MUCH annoyed at the reaction of my readers. Many that I thought were steady and reasonable have shown themselves to be easily caught up in a wave of false emotionalism instead of taking a step back and waiting for all of the fact to emerge.
FIRST!!!!! Do a simple Google search for nude military chicks. YEAH USE THOSE WORDS! You will find females in all states of undress taking selfies and posting them online (am I saying that unauthorized pics of nude Marines weren't taken..NO but I am saying that their are plenty of pics of all female service members online...not my thing but its out there). SECOND!!! Check out the source for this story! It's here and just take a look at the staff. THESE PEOPLE HAVE AN AGENDA!
All I'm saying is that these sites are suppose to be about expression. You get pissed because I kick people off the page that I think crossed the line? These fuckers didn't do that. They instead launched a full blue falcon strike! Instead of telling these guys to knock it off if they thought they were out of line they instead did a hit piece to increase exposure. GET REAL PEOPLE! See this for what it is! I know this isn't popular but I'm damn near begging you. Wait for the facts and stop pounding on these Marines before you KNOW all the facts!
Rant over.

About the story of passing pics of nude Marines...wait before you freak out
By now you've heard stories of pics of nude female Marines being passed around a social media site frequented by active and former Marines. Before you freak out, wait a sec and see what the deal is.
Why?
Because I have a theory about what's going on.
First female Marines pose nude. They do it for boyfriends, girlfriends, personal social sites and for pay by people wanting to run "nude military chicks" websites.
Second, it will help with the agenda to get females in the infantry by pushing for lower standards. How could this help that? Because they will say that more women in the infantry will protect both sexes from this type of thing.
So cool your jets and wait.

Trump's wiretap claims, Obama's commanders intent & the battle for your mind
This is too juicy guys. The deep state is mounting a full scale psyops campaign against the American people.
Sit back, watch this carefully and be discerning!
One thing though. Everyone knows the commanders intent. If it's to go fuck people up on the battlefield or to use every dirty trick possible to smear a political opponent!

Hmm. A tank based on an IFV hull? Nothing earth shattering, but should be called Infantry Support Vehicle.
via Defense Studies Blog
Sharing that they made significant progress with Reviews their Indonesian partners regarding the medium weight class tank project conducted under the auspices of the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, Mr. Küçük continued, "Here, we are developing a tank in Approximately 32-35 tons of weight. The weight will be adjusted based on the armor configuration over it. We are developing a tank with the weight suitable for the field in the given region. The turret Directly over the tank was selected by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. It has a 105 mm long turret and it has the turret's own systems over it. We aim to develop our own turret systems with the Turkish Defense Companies and we wish to initiate the serial production with our own turretsStory here.
