Question. Has the UN finally become irrelevant?

I ask you all this question.  Has the UN finally become irrelevant on the world stage?

Remember back when the UK and France were pushing for action against Libya and President Obama made his famous lead from behind remark?  The UK didn't, neither did France and certainly not this liberal administration ask for UN assistance or permission.

Remember the issues in Ukraine?  The UN was on the sidelines.

Today we're talking about taking action against ISIS.  Not once has the Obama administration talked about getting the UN's blessings....and just today I read where the UN is pulling out of the Golan Heights and no one is even batting an eye.

Have we all missed a very important development?  Has the UN been rendered irrelevant when it comes to dealing with the world's most important issues?  Is it now only a glorified Red Cross that agitates when a humanitarian crisis erupts?  Is it headed toward becoming a modern day League of Nations....as in soon to be kaput...and no one is noticing?

  1. Let's get serious...the UN has been a bunch of irrelevant wankers pretty much non-stop since 1953.

  2. A new world war was the downfall of the League of Nations. No reason to think that another won't kill the UN and replace it with something more 'relevant'. Meaning tyrannical.

    1. The comparison to the downfall of League of Nations in light of of last conflicts around globe is indeed staggering... almost a deja vu.

The most terrifying thing is that what happen next...

    2. Look at the permanent members of the Security Council. Is there really any reason for Britain and France to still be in the big boys club? Britain will be especially laughable if Scotland secedes and takes Northern Ireland with it shortly afterward.

    3. I could answer that for France :
-We still have the capacity( yes, smaller ) of first and forced entry in conflict
      -We are nuclear power
-We have full army ( navy, air, ground)
-We are still at high tech.

  3. Not much you can do when the biggest troublemakers in the world all sit in the security council and finance it (China, US, Russia) and can simply ignore any UN demands or warnings as it can't efforce any of it by itself.

To be honest, the only way for the UN to be truly relevant is if it had a force at the VERY LEAST as strong as Russia's and ROEs that allowed constant punishment until the threat is gone. I really don't think this will happen before the next big war, tho. (And then it will probably be far too late)

  4. The UN has been DoA since the Korean war.
So much so that If I ever saw a UN patrol in my neighborhood, I would not take them prisoners.

  5. Most big organizations like UN, EU, NATO,IMF,etc...are really irrelevant today because they were created for a different set of circumstances that don't exist any more (i.e:Cold War) or different economic situation(i.e: rise of China and Asian countries , huge economic problems in USA and Europe...). They haven't figured out how to change and for the most part should be eliminated and replaced with organizations that would be adapted to today's needs and situations.
