U.S., Russia to build lunar space station...COMMON SENSE is back in fashion!

Roscosmos, Russia's space agency, announced Wednesday it would join the United States in the construction of a lunar space station. The moon-orbiting space station, dubbed Deep Space Gateway, would serve as a stepping stone for manned-missions to Mars.Story here.
Russia signed on to the DSG cooperation agreement at the astronautical congress held in Adelaide, Australia, this week.
In a press release, Roscosmos said it would work with the United States to ensure a standardization process during the design phase -- an effort to ensure space technology from participating countries would be compatible with the modules and docking stations.
"Roscosmos and NASA have already agreed on standards for a docking unit of the future station. Taking into account the country's extensive experience in developing docking units, the station's future elements will be created using Russian designs," Roscosmos said. "Developed standards will be used by all countries in the development and creation of their space technology."
Chest thumping time. I told you that space exploration was one of the easy areas that the US and Russia should work together on...and now it looks like its a distinct possibility.

But on a more serious note. It's been over a year (if you count the efforts of the Obama Admin in their final year to find evidence) since the investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump administration. They've found nothing and will find nothing. They will haul out a retired general and an international campaign consultant to wave their broken bodies before the mob but in the end they had nothing.
With the temperature turned down between Russia and the US we can finally focus on China. A nation that Dunford has stated will be our number one threat (they're not number one because of N. Korea) by 2025.

Watch this video carefully. It sounds awesome and at a glance its impressive. Then consider the state of Puerto Rico. Remember that more than 3 million people live on that island.
Then freeze the video at the 17 second mark when they hit you with the metrics of the effort. 10K pounds of water? A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. That's 1250 gallons of water delivered. An active Marine in a humid environment would go thru a gallon of water in half a day. So let's be generous and say that a sedentary individual could make do on one gallon per day and be good to go. Let's stretch it out. Let's say that one person could get by on 1/4 gallon.
Then think about the population of the island again.
This relief effort ain't working. It's not the fault of the Marines and other service members on the ground. We're seeing a failure of leadership that boggles the mind.
I warned about this and it's coming true. The Marine Corps and the other services are about to get a huge black eye because the NorthCom Commander has failed to get ahead of the curve.

China under supreme leader Xi Jinping is stepping up coordinated intelligence operations aimed at influencing foreign governments into backing Beijing's anti-democratic goals, according to a new study.Story here.
Chinese influence operations involve multiple government and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence organizations that seek to buy, guide, or coerce foreign governments into advancing its agenda, says the study written by New Zealand professor Anne-Marie Brady, a fellow at the Wilson Center.
"Even more than his predecessors, Xi Jinping has led a massive expansion of efforts to shape foreign public opinion in order to influence the decision-making of foreign governments and societies," the report says.
"China's foreign influence activities have the potential to undermine the sovereignty and integrity of the political system of targeted states," the report warns.
Using New Zealand as a case study, the report reveals that Xi recently urged overseas Chinese nationals and ethnic Chinese residents to infiltrate foreign governments.
In New Zealand, several ethnic Chinese politicians have been elected to the parliament of the South Pacific nation, which is a key intelligence ally of the United States.

The improvement in relations follows talks between Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last week.
For weeks, US officials had braced for Moscow to take retaliatory measures against US facilities in Russia in response to Washington’s closure of a Russian consulate in San Francisco in late August. But following last week’s meetings, Moscow is signaling an end to the feud, and US officials are expressing cautious optimism about the two diplomats’ conversations.
“They were able to exchange and operate with candor and make progress,” Tillerson aide R.C. Hammond told BuzzFeed News. “We’re encouraged about that.”

Israeli lawmakers approve F-35's bought but want to examine alternatives before buying more

While lawmakers endorsed the government’s recent actions to acquire another 17 aircraft and thereby ensure two full stealth squadrons for the Air Force, they insisted follow-on purchases must be assessed in terms of how they contribute to national defense policy relative to alternatives.Story here.
Israel finalized last month an agreement with the U.S. government and F-35 prime contractor Lockheed Martin for another 17 planes. It was the third tranche of F-35 contracts, following an order for 19 aircraft in 2010 and another 14 F-35s in 2015.
“This does not detract from the vast professionalism of the Israel Air Force, but we cannot ignore the need to meticulously assess the face of the future, especially with regard to air combat platforms, which are so expensive, critical and [subject to] rapidly changing technologies,” subcommittee authors wrote.
Lawmakers said they intended to exercise their oversight role through a series of hearings on air-power alternatives aimed at influencing the IDF’s next five-year plan following the current plan, “Gideon,” which ends in 2020.
“The Committee will assess in depth ... the issue of Israeli rocket capabilities, and the potential for realistic and significant alternatives to the aerial option. The committee reasons that despite the proven capability of the Israel Air Force, it must seriously assess alternatives given future challenges and threats to the Air Force‘s ability to operate in any theater and under any conditions.”
Hmm. Wonder who's whispering in the ear of Israeli lawmakers. This is totally unexpected and I wonder if the IDF isn't looking for an off ramp with the F-35.
One thing about this airplane that hasn't been talked about with the IDF is this. Who pays for the needed upgrades? I don't know the block they bought or what structural and software upgrades will be needed to make the airplanes fully combat capable, but they're buying early...real early.
Are they gonna do like the US and simply park those airplanes and buy newer ones later or do they pay to upgrade?
Additionally this statement indicates that there is some doubt about the ability to penetrate enemy air defenses into the future.
Did the S-400 just make the IDF blink? Do they have intel that makes them believe it might be better to transport a Long Range MLRS to a vacant part of the desert and let the rockets penetrate enemy airspace?
This is a good read but leaves me with more questions than answers.
We definitely need to watch this carefully.

How pathetic is the relief mission in Puerto Rico? A reader blasts the metrics!

To give you an idea of what 44K pounds is, that about the max payload for a single C-130, and slightly more than a single Class 8 tractor trailer combo...Unimpressive doesn't even begin to describe it. That's why I love my community. So much military experience from so many fields that there is little that we can't puzzle together.
I would not publish those numbers - they are not impressive.
And thanks to one of them we get a pretty good description of the relief effort.
It's pathetic, and woefully insufficient. Earlier I stated that the NorthCom Commander was in over her head and should be fired.
Let me raise the stakes a bit. She should be fired, reduced in grade and then forced to retire.
This is totally unsat.
